In Progress: Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 25 Jim Clark 1963

Hi Folks,

Here is a picture of my in progress Lotus 25. I have got as far as box 7 already. I have added detail to the brake calipers and a brake line as I saw this on the Donnigton Collection website. I have also replaced the gear knob with a piece of wood from the end of a paint brush, sanded down to size and attached with 0.4mm copper wire.

I will post as this progresses.

Thanks,
BillyPee

If anyone has used to Acu Stion detail set for this did they work out how the wheel rims were supposed to be fitted? They seem to be just too big. Thxs

Re: In Progress: Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 25 Jim Clark 1963

Thanks Bobble83 and Robrex for the feedback.

Well its weekend, so I plan to get on with the Engine. For those who have the model, the plan is to complete steps 8, 9, and 10. I don't normally complete models in a linear fashion, but the instructions on this model are well laid out. The only deviation from them I have done so far is to paint all the green parts.

Okay, so the task is to turn this...

Into something resembling this...

These piccies are from the Donington Collection and are okay as far as they go but if anyone can point me in the direction of better (or more) reference pictures of the Coventry Climax engine I would be very appreciative. I am particularly interesting in the dizzy cap as those HT leads must terminate somewhere!

Oh well, on with the sanding and priming!

Later,
BillyPee

Ooops. I must be suffering from Double-click-itus!

Also, these images are huge at the moment yet they are tiny in photo-bucket! Apologies to anyone who doesnt have a 30" monitor.

P.S. That includes me :-)

Re: In Progress: Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 25 Jim Clark 1963

Hi folks,

Well the engine is all painted up. I am waiting for the yellow hose to arrive, as I tried painting clear tubing but it just flakes off! I have busied myself on decaling the body which is 80% done, just the split door numbers left which will have to wait for the rest of the body work to be done. I will take some photos once the engine is complete.

The thing that strikes me most about this car is just how small it is. Compared to say my FW24 it must only be 2/3rds the size, yet they are both 1/20th! No wonder so many drivers were killed in those days, there is so little protection.

I will take a photo showing the size difference too!

Thanks,
Billypee.

Coming along superbly so far. I wish the powers that be would release more of older F1 and sports cars in styrene. The Sixties were the most elegant era of racing IMHO.

Re: In Progress: Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 25 Jim Clark 1963

Yes there certainly are some lovely 60's cars out there... and some even nicer 50's machines too. I would welcome more choice especially in 1/20 so that you really get an idea of how things have changed. The added benefit is that you can find much better references of the older cars as they are no longer trying to protect the technology. You try building an accurate F2005 or 248. The other bonus with these is that there is no CF to apply :-)

Re: In Progress: Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 25 Jim Clark 1963

Yeah well no CF......but rivets....lots of them:-)
I have a 25 lying around that i started long time ago and got annoyed by the exhaust pipes ( done the second scratch built ones and still don't work good enough ). If you have good reference you will see there's an awful lot wrong with the model but if you can see over that it's still a very nice shape.
I don't mind the current cars either. each era has it's beauties and letdowns :-)

Re: In Progress: Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 25 Jim Clark 1963

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I know what you mean about the exhausts. The Donington references that I have are in a completely different arrangement. I am not the sort of modeller to get too tied up on the details though... although I don't have anything other than admiration for people who do.

Here is an in progress picture to keep everyone interested. When I have the yellow piping I can fit the rocker covers, then work on the fuel lines and carbs... and then I will worry about the exhausts. Decals went on 10 mins ago so no clear on them yet... and the micro set has left some ugly puddles which I will rub off when the decals have settled for a week or so.

Couple of things. I cant now clear the bottom green section, and I should have attached the front chin and filled it into the top section smoothly but I didnt notice that until it was too late. Also, I have removed some detail from the engine as I will replace with PE in the next few days.

Take care guys,
Billypee

Re: In Progress: Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 25 Jim Clark 1963

Hi Folks,

Sorry it has been a while. Anyway, its finished now (apart from a coat of clear that will go on in a couple of weeks). Here are the photos...

Engine has been details with yellow piping around black tube. Rocker covers done with X18 painted over bare metal foil to pick out detail and show wearing.

The last photo is just to demonstrate how small this Lotus is. Believe it or not these are both 1/20th!

All the best,
BillyPee
