I'm no tire expert, but I'll take a stab at it. The 205 is the width of the tire, the 40 is the thickness of the tire and the 17 is the size of the tire or of the rim that is going to be mounted on. Hopefully that gave you a little insight of what you wanted to know. Peace :alien:

No problem, as far as the tire width goes I would go from 205-215. You don't won't to go to wide.

205/40/17

205= size of the tire ( circumfrence )
40 = size off the rim ( how low profile is -tire thickness- )
17 = size of rim the tire is wrapped around..

something like that.

i thought it's nice to go wider cuz you'll have a bigger floor patch which means more grip for the car....maybe it's only good for autoX, i dunno, but 215 is perfect cuz our car isn't as heavy as a mustang or a camaro which they use a 245 width....only drawback of having a wider tire is it adds more weight to the car

205/40/17

205 is tire width in in millemeters.
the profile is 40, which is 40% of the width
17 is the rim diameter.

Hope that helps.

Yeah i just wanted to say that another drawback from having wider tires, is a bigger contact patch which may or may not be good cause if you're racing drag or going for top speed then you need really skinny tires on the wheels that aren't powered, that's why top fuel racers have those really small "bicycle" wheels on the front and gigantalorious tires on the back. But if you need any sort of good handling then wider is better
