Check Engine Light Problem
The check engine light on my 2001 Ford Ranger Edge came on. Autozone did a code check and indicated that it was po401, the EGR valve. I installed a new EGR valve, cleaning the port ffirst. Had the code erased. The check engine light came on again, got the code erased again. One week later the Check engine light came on again. Any suggestions on what should be done next.

Re: Check Engine Light Problem
P0401 is not the code for an EGR valve. It stated there is insufficient flow. Usualy this code due to the DPFE sensor.

Re: Check Engine Light Problem
have the code read again and post the exact number here. We can lead you in the right direction from there. The DPFE is a known failure item and will produce a P0401 or a P0402

Re: Check Engine Light Problem
eagittens. If you have aP0401 and have cleaned the EGR ports, check the DPFE. There should be about .7 to 1 volt at idle. There are 3 wires going to it. One had 5 volts, one varies and the other is ground. Find out if one of the wires has varying voltage while you open the EGR with a vacuum pump. This needs to be done with the key on--engine not running. The easiest and best way to turn off the light is to have it reset with a scan tool. The place that read your code should reset it for you.

Re: Check Engine Light Problem
My 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 liter, 4x4 check engine light came on at 50,035 miles. I took it to a popular automotive parts store and they read a P0401 code as insufficent flow and said the EGR valve needed to be replaced. I bought the EGR valve for $50 bucks. Before installing it I got on this forum and read that this code is usually due to the DPFE sensor and that Ford had extended the warranty to 50,000 miles to cover this. Well I knew I was 35 miles over that, but I called my local Ford Service department and was told that the warranty was actually extended another 24,000 miles beyond the factory supplied warranty of 36,000 miles - giving it a total 60,000 mile warranty coverage. I made the appointment, they replaced the DPFE sensor and the truck is fixed. I returned the EGR valve. This forum is great, not only did it save me money, but many hours of frustration.
