'96 Bonneville Momentary Stalls

My '96 Bonneville SE will intermittently stall while driving on level/flat roads. It may cut out and back in or stall completely, most of the time it just stutters. It will restart, once only after cooling off. It displays no "Check Engine" or codes?? Any thoughts on what it could be?
After reading other posts, I have checked and cleaned all of the ground circuit terminals to no avail. Not real excited about replacing the CPS, since according to other posts, it has only a 50% effective "fix rate".

Do you have spark and or injector pulse when it won't start?

Re: '96 Bonneville Momentary Stalls

Not sure if I had anything. I was on the side of the road. So I waited 20-30 minutes , after a few failed attempts, and it fired up. Ran fine for 2 days and then I just had a momentary loss of power while driving. When it does this, I lose evrything for 1-2 seconds, RPM's drop and the idiot lights come on. It acts like an intermittent short?

The only way to find this without just replacing parts is to check what I told you about when the car will not restart, then post back results.

Re: '96 Bonneville Momentary Stalls

I had the same problem on my 94 Bonneville and also on the daughter's 95 Bonneville. It was the ignition module connector. You can try spraying the heck out of the connector and the ignition module pins with an oilless contact cleaner like from Radio Shack. If that helps for a few days, that's it. My new connector was soldered in. I also have another item to mention. When I replaced my connector, I put in a new ignition module. Recently (about 6 months after the connector replacement), engine trouble codes P0321 and P1361 came in. The intermittent problem ended up being a pin on the ignition module that turned dark and lost good contact. Good luck.

Re: '96 Bonneville Momentary Stalls

Just wondering how you made out with this problem, and what was the solution?

Re: '96 Bonneville Momentary Stalls

The CRANK sensor might be the problem.. when it stalls pour a cold gallon of water on the harmonic balancer.. If it starts when cooled.. I suspect it.

Good luck.

Re: '96 Bonneville Momentary Stalls

I had a 96 Bonneville that had the same problem, and after 2 fuel pumps and ignition, they found that it was a ground wire somwhere under the dash that controlled everything. The car would die out at anytime and then after awhile it would start back up. I had to deal with this for like 6 months and having to keep taking it back to dealer. they finally figured it out. Good Luck!!!
