Question 95 MGM EGR Problems?

i think i have some EGR valve issues. engine light was on before and shop said it had to do with EGR valve. sat for a couple months started it up today and no light. starts and runs good in PARK but when i drop it in any drive gears is bogs down and if you dont let off the brake to let it move and gain RPMs it will die. read up a lot on EGR problems thinking about pulling the valve to check it out. any tips? anyone else know whats going on?

thanks advanced

Re: 95 MGM EGR Problems?

thanks for the response and help. i read a post on cleaning the EGR runners and did that last night. It was pretty clogged but after puttting everything back together it still ran the same and engine light was still on. ill check into the MAF.

Re: 95 MGM EGR Problems?

Yeah I imagine this post is in relation to the engine light being on all the time? Sometimes startups are a little rough as well (starts fine, but when put in reverse it acts kind of like it's flooded). I'm wondering if this EGR is the issue with my dad car.

The dealership says it's oxygen sensor issues. They replace one (4 in total in this model) clean off the others and the same problem happens 5000 km later. The dealership really rips you off to boot, they need to recalibrate the engine etc. Far as I'm concerned the dealership knows what the problem is but is just using this as a money grab.

Anyway, the solution we use is periodically disconnect the battery if the light doesn't go away after a while. Seems to work although annoying.

Should we be looking into this EGR part?

I has similar problems. Changed converters, maf sensor, pulgs, wires, flushed injectors, etc. I finally changed the 7 dollar fuel filter and all the problems went away. Turns out the filter was nasty dirty and was causing the injectors to get dirty and so on.

Re: 95 MGM EGR Problems?

Cleaning the Mass Airflow sensor does make sense since he is using a K&N filter.

I printed off both of your suggestions and handed them to my dad to try someday. He regularly uses those fuel injector cleaner additives so hopefully that is working. Not sure if he changes the fuel filter more than average, but he usually maintains his car very well and does required service early in almost all cases. Anyway, I guess if we ran into some bad gas there could be a problem.

I guess another question I have, do those little 1/8 gallon bottles of additive (fuel injector cleaners etc.) really do much in 20 gallons of gasoline?

Use some stuff called SeaFoam, you can get it at NAPA/CarQuest for about $6..it's good stuff. K& N are rough on the MAF!

Why did you buy a $40K vehicle and not a $100 Factory Service Manual?

Re: 95 MGM EGR Problems?

yes i totaly forgot bout the sea foam love the product and you can tell it does good for your engine heres a link on what to do with it http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00151.html and i really dont think that a little bottle of fuel injector cleaner really works because most fuel already has some chemicals to help clean your fuel system but personally i wouldnt run them because its just a waste of money to me to spend 3$ every time u fuel up thats just to often for me but all i can say is its not hurting it so its your call in the end

Just so I am clear, is the K&N filter rough on the MAP because it does not clean the air properly? What else could be the reason?

Is Seafoam something you put in your gas tank, or is it something you have to dump directly into the throttle body to get the proper effect?

Re: 95 MGM EGR Problems?

the reason k&n filters are some times rough on mafs is because when it comes time to clean and oil the filters if not done right people like to over oil the filter and it sucks in your intake which has to pass through causeing the scensor to get gummed up with oil and just click the link it should show you all you need to know about running the seafoam through your engine and i would highly recomend it hope this halps and good luck

Re: 95 MGM EGR Problems?

Yeah, what CobraDude said! It's not really the filter's fault.

In this case the filter is too new, never had to re-oil the filter yet. I'm not the cause this time.

I went to NAPA and a can of the electrical spray costs $25. I'm thinking there's something more reasonable elsewhere.

How much does a new mass airflow sensor cost. If it's $50 maybe I should just install a new sensor.

Try an electronic supply house, Radio Shack, ?? for some cleaner. I see you are in Canada, nothing is reasonably priced there. Be sitting down before you ask a price for the MAF, about $100 here in the states.

Re: 95 MGM EGR Problems?

Yeah I'll try a Radio Shack to see what they've got. I figure that Canadian Tire might have a similar thing at a reasonable price as well.

I totally agree with you, things cost way more in Canada than the U.S. even after you consider the currency differences . I think there is less competition in Canada to keep retailers honest. Also, we've got higher tax rates up here so people jack up their prices to get the same profit as they would in the U.S.

I remember about 15 years ago when I was into remote control cars that I used to buy a can of spray to clean out those electric motors for about $6. I'm guessing that stuff would work for these purposes.
