Dealer wants $470 to fix power window on 95 Firebird

Well today I took my 95 firebird in to have the driver side window checked. Its been only going down about 1 inch and stopping.

They told me it would cost $470 in parts and labor. Is that nuts or?? On ebay I see window motors going for $15-$20ish. Labor at a mom and pop garage would cost about $100-$120 with my part.

Think I iwll go with the mom and pop place -- any suggestions?

Re: Dealer wants $470 to fix power window on 95 Firebird

Are you sure its the motor? I had a window problem on the grand am, turned out to be a bad track, but on the camaro it was the motor, same symptoms on both cars. Most of the charge they are giving you is labor, taking the door apart and putting it back together isn't a fast job if you want it done right.

Re: Dealer wants $470 to fix power window on 95 Firebird

i am almost 100% shure it is the window motor. My 95 z28 did the SAME thing, it would go down an inch stop try 30sec later it would do the same thing. If you don't know any thing about cars, have mom and pop place do it, otherwise, do it yourself, save $100, $470 is outragous!!

They said it was the moter and asembly + labor. I found a local spot that will do it for 2 hours labor (est) -- it will be under $150 labor and a $30ish part.

thank you man..

l got those instrctions too, you gave me months ago, but l am scared to do it by myself.. because my mechanic told me, if it the first time (he didnt see it, we talked on the phone) it would be real hard and probably you cant do it, cuz you have to drill, and cut some parts.. but if it is already replaced before, then u can do it by yourself..

so how can l know if mine is replaced before or this is gonna be the first time???

Take the door panel off but drilling out rivets is like childs play.

Re: Dealer wants $470 to fix power window on 95 Firebird

Yeah, I would definately suggest doing it yourself. It's really not as hard as you may think it to be. It took me less that 45 minutes to swap out my driver side window motor. It's all just the matter of drilling the holes right, and if you don't then no biggie, you can just drill another hole. It's not like anyones going to actually see it if you screw up. It's fairly simple to do. I've actually got to go in and replace all my screws that came with my replacement motor, 2 of them fell out and the motor came out of the bracket, so it's just hanging there. I've got to manually pull my window up and down. So if you order the replacement motor, make sure you find some different screws, or just use them with some lock tight.
