Words of Advice

Well.. I've never really noticed it until now, but this is my final semester of high school. There are a few options I could follow.. I could head straight into university, but it wouldn't be the one i want to go to.. I could take a year off and work until I'm finacially stable to go to Alberta for the education I want, or I can simply take a year off to travel. I really have no idea what I want to do after, but that's not my biggest worry. It's what I should be expecting. To everyone who's out of high school, any words of advice? Would anyone like to share their 'straight out of high school' experience? Much appreciated!

Go to school, get it over with. Otherwise you might not end up going at all.

loeman's probably right. You might find a decent enough job, and start liking the income. next thing you realize, its 5 years later. not making as good enough money as you were expecting for 5 years work, but stuck because you cannot afford to go to school anymore.

Re: Words of Advice

I went into the career i wanted to. Haven't had any regrets either, i know a lot of people who are putting off going to college and it just doesn't seem like they're having as much fun as i am, i've got the degree i need, i work at a decent paying job and i'm getting ready to move out of state. Get it over with now, the hard work you do now will give you enough time to play later on in life, and you'll have more money to do it. Besides there are some experiences you get in college that you can't get anywhere else.

Re: Words of Advice

I went into college right after high school for Multimedia and now I'm regretting it. Yeah, it was good experience and all but I can't find a good job for it anywhere. I either need a higher degree or a few years of experience and I can't even find anywhere to get the experience. Then again, I guess going helped me realize it wasn't the best thing for me to decide to go into. Just make sure whatever you go for that its what you really wanna do for the rest of your life.

Travel while you can!! There will be plenty of things to keep you busy later on; right now with virtually nothing to hold you back and no financial worries, you'll enjoy traveling. It will also keep your options open for Alberta; get the education you want.

Re: Words of Advice

if you can find a decent enough job, then i would definitely stay and save some money. trust me, go to the school you want, and get the education you want. don't settle for less. if that means you have to sacrifice a little time and save some money, then go for it. there's nothing better then having plenty of money in the bank. you have enough to worry about without having financial concerns too. if you want to do some traveling, then after a year in alberta, save some more money and then do a semester abroad in europe or new zealand or wherever.
BUT! if you do stay and work, make sure to STAY FOCUSED! make sure you save every possible cent. i've known plenty of people who have put off college to save money and have never ended up going because they lost sight of their goal and never saved any money. they just spent it on stupid, worthless crap, and they ended up leaving. DON'T BE LIKE THAT!

personally, i graduated a semester early from high school and went straight to college in january of my senior year. i wouldn't recommend that to everybody, that's just what worked best for me. high school was great and all, i was just ready to move on with my life. college is much better than high school anyway

Re: Words of Advice

It really just depends on what you want to do with your life. A degree is not a guarantee you will make alot of money, and not having a degree is not a guarantee you will be broke the rest of your life. I have been at my job for five years, and I made 48k last year (no degree). That isn't great money, but my family is comfortable.
So I guess what I am saying is, if you are going to college get it over with (so you can get your job and pay for all the student loans you will acquire). If not get out there and get a good job with a future in it, and start making some money (while your friends are still paying for their student loans )

Oh yeah, whether you go now, or wait, or don't go at all, stay away from credit cards, they are the devil. That is my advice.
