stall converter and gears question

so i'm deciding on buying a street fighter 3500 stall converter for my 98 Trans Am (daily driver)..and thinking about 3:73 gears too..since i have 2:23..and of course a transmission cooler

i am curious is this a good choice for the gears and converter and should i invest in a shift kit??..
not sure how it will act with the converter?...
and is there anything else i should invest in near this topic?? ......
any input will help dealing with the converter, gears, shift kit and ect..
thanks

Re: stall converter and gears question

3.73's are a good choice of gear for an A4.
3600 stall is about as big as I would go on a daily driver.

Re: stall converter and gears question

You can put a 4.10 on an automatic car...and it performs WELL.
But you lose mileage because the motor spins higher quicker. Basicly.

Re: stall converter and gears question

i would go with a transgo shift kit, it will not hurt it, actuly it helps it last longer.

Re: stall converter and gears question

ah.. i might go with a shift kit ..thx
now back to the 4:10 gears..will this waste gas all the time or only like on high way driving?
what will the difference be between the 3:73 and the 4:10 gear..
and knowing that i'm getting a 3500 stall..and the cars a daily driver what should i go with 3.73 or 4:10?
sorry about all the questions i just want to try and get the best for the car..and of course don't want to waste money....
thanks for all the help

Re: stall converter and gears question

A 4.10 gear with the automatic will suck. If it is driven at all on the street, stick with 3.73's.
Mileage would be horrible with the 4.10's under most driving conditions.

Re: stall converter and gears question

well today i called up ammco to get a price quote on installing a 3500 stall converter...the guy i spoke to said that he wont do it becasue its a disaster waiting to happen..due to that its a 1998 transmission.... first they would need to upgrade most of the transmission so that it could handle the torque..and it would cost around $2000 to do...is this a bunch of bull or what????

Re: stall converter and gears question

well i found out why they wouldnt do it..due to they cant be insured with parts i bring in..but i found this other place they said they would do it for $250 for the stall converter and $300 to install the 3.73 gears so about 500 and some for everything...does this sound pretty decent??

also is there any instructions for installing the gears??

i use to be in the automotive program at my college, so maybe they'll let me sneek in and use their tools..lol...if the jobs not too difficult...
thanks for the help

Re: stall converter and gears question

Stall isn't TOO bad.

Gears are difficult. Or at least can be without the right tools. I know I don't have those tools here.
