Very Very Confused!!! HELP!

I have a 93 1.9L LX sedan with 78K on it. My 2nd to last mileage was 28mpg, this last time, it was 26.5 and it is slowly decreasing. I dont know why it is doing it, but I am kinda getting sick of fixing my escort. I recently changed my plugs/wires, cleaned my K&N airfilter, and I am using some NEW product called Bio-Performance that I was putting in after I filled up, but then realized I was putting it in wrong and now I am putting it in before I fill up. Then my mileage started to decrease. I am so confused, I am getting fed up with this escort. I turn around and something else needs to be done with it. Does anyone think I need to have the Fuel Injection System flushed or something. I really dont use heat all too much...maybe a 1 out of 4 on the dial. The tires are all balanced correctly and properly inflated.. I noticed there is a slight pull to the right, but that would not do anything to the mileage would it? I am lost.. please help me..Oh, and that Bio-Performance stuff is guaranteed to not screw up an engine, so it is completely safe to use.

sounds as though maybe a caliper is sticking which in turn may be adding drag think thats possible?

What's your fuel mileage without the additive?

Re: Very Very Confused!!! HELP!

mileage without the additive was 25mpg..so i dont think that is a good gas mileage...at all..

i also hope that the caliper is sticking so then it would be an easier fix. thanks..I will check it out tomorrow..

Re: Very Very Confused!!! HELP!

A couple of questions... Do you live in a colder climate and are you letting your car warm up in the morning? My 95's get about 6 to 7 mph less in the winter time than in the summer. If you think that you have a hanging brake, don't forget to check the rear too. If you have one rear brake hanging, for example a hung brake e-brake cable, it too can give you a pull.

Your car is 13 years old, do you exspect it to last forever with out service? When was the last time you replaced the O2 sensor? That additive might be safe for the "engine", but it does'nt take much to screw up an old O2 Sensor, and there directly related to gas milage.

then another debate (at least in the 99) there is 2 sensor one before and one after the cat.

Re: Very Very Confused!!! HELP!

jeffescortlx I think is onto your problem. The 02 sensor becomes contaminated from fuel additives or any kind of silicone spray cleaner. I don't think the poor fuel mileage is due to emissions problems. You'd get a code if that was the case. Replace the 02 sensor. There is just one on the inilet pipe of the cat.

On Obd2 (96 and newer) the first O2 (closest to the manifold) is the important one that effects perfromance and gas milage. The 2nd O2 is just there to trip the cel if there's a problem with the cat.

Re: Very Very Confused!!! HELP!

thanks for the important info guys.. I never thought about the O2 sensor at all.. Is it hard to change? I mean can I do it myself? I hope so,... and now I am getting worse mileage. my worst is 21.5 and I think I am beating that with this tank. If I change the O2 sensor, can I still put the Additive in there again or cant I??

Very easy to do you'll jjust need a special wrench its a deep socket that has a grove in its side (for the wire). All availlable at autozone.

Re: Very Very Confused!!! HELP!

that additive, despite what it says on the bottle may cause you problems... i doubt it is the gas milage problem though. i have read articles on how over time, if used consistently octane booster can foul spark plugs, they become covered in a red "dust" and the spark has a hard time finding a ground... this can lead to the spark eventually grounding on the ignition coil... which means you have to replace it and spend some big $$. thats a short explantation.

with the pulling, you said the tires are balanced and inflated properly, however you didnt say it was alinged properly...

this one is just a wild guess, cause if this goes real bad the car wont run at all. could the map sensor be messed up? this went bad on my escort with the same engine. but mine just got fried and the car died, but i suppose if it was working but working improperly it could screw up the timing and fuel mixture.
