Replacing the cat.

Got a 98 (which i hear are famous for bad cats) that needs a new catalytic converter. What i'm wanting to do is just simply cut the old one off and somehow bolt on a new one considering i really don't have access to a welder. My question is, can i do this and how hard would it be? I think i needa 2.5" cat. Is this correct?

I found this cat on ebay. Does anyone think this one will work? Thanx.

You just might have to add pipe if there not the same lengths.

Re: Replacing the cat.

You can buy an aftermarket cat from autozone that you can bolt right on with muffler clamps

Re: Replacing the cat.

Either one will work just fine however, they should be welded into the system for best results. Usually a shop will weld it in for you at a nominal cost.

Re: Replacing the cat.

Weld the cat. on,no clamps.Stay away from the one from AutoZone(really called AutoJunk). The fastest way to cut the old cat is a recipicating saw with a 6'' 18tpi blade.Do not throw the old one away and there is a reason why.The old one is worth some money,$50.00-$60.00 for the old cat. There are guys out there buying them from auto repair shops, auto salvage yards just for the metals inside.
