Shocking news
I have a 2000 Silverado 5.3 2WD, ext. cab and the truck is essentially stock. The original shocks have a little over 80,000 miles on them. The guy at NAPA told me that shocks for this particular truck, because of the chassis package, were best ordered from the dealer. Well, they have them all right, at around 200.00 each.
Any number of manufacturers, including Bilstein, list part numbers for this truck. I don't have 800.00 to spend on stock shocks. Anybody else encountered this problem? I'm just looking for good quality street-oriented shocks. |

Re: Shocking news
The guy at NAPA must be a DA. Monroe makes a very good shock for lots less than the dealer wants. If you do a lot of towing and need something to make her a little more level, the Bilsteins are the way to go.
I have a pair of OEM replaced shocks to replace the bent Monroe shocks I had on the back (long story) and they didn't cost anywhere near $200 a piece. If I recall correctly, they were somewhere in the neighborhood of $60-70 a piece. |

Re: Shocking news
I got 4 Rancho RSX shocks for my 99 1500 EC 4x4 and didn't even have to jack the truck up to replace them. The 4 shocks only cost me $160.00 shipped. Made a huge difference in the truck's handling and ride.

Re: Shocking news
I hate Rancho shocks. Those are one of the brands I put on for people in the shop I work at and people are always comming back.

Re: Shocking news
If your truck has Bilsteins, They are lifetime guaranteed.
I don't know if the dealer honors that, but you could find a shop that sells Bilsteins and try to get them replaced if you do the work, or maybe if you pay the shop the labor, they will get them for you. Bob B |

Re: Shocking news
You can get sets of stock shocks on E-bay for $25-$50.. don't know anything about any ride control system, but shoot.. for a sixteenth to a thirtieth the price, I'd do without!

Re: Shocking news
I have the same ride control system. Cheapest I've seen these shocks on ebay (just researching, mine are still fine at 50000) was $150 each. I have been told by numerous people that yes, you can unhook the solenoids at the shocks and use the cheap Monroes (seen THOSE as cheap as $20/pair on ebay) or even good aftermarket ones like Rancho that are spec for the non-ride-control trucks, BUT it will light up a warning light, and possibly throw a code. One guy said he just put black tape over the light in his dash...
