I have rebuilt the motor in my 1995 Isuzu Rodeo and now that we have the motor back in we are having trouble setting the ignition timing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried everything the Chiltons manual says and everything that I can think of please help fast.

Re: IMPORTANT!! Ingition Timing Trouble
Valve timing? Ignition (spark) timing is all electronic & not adjustable on 3.2's.

Re: IMPORTANT!! Ingition Timing Trouble
After replacing timing belt ingine will not run (it has previously run before removing the timing belt). I have the cam and crank in time and the engine will not run. What I am saying is that I need to know how to time the engine. I have tried to pull number 1 cylinder up on compression and still will not run. Have made several attempts on number 1 cylinder. How do you time engine? The Chiltons book is showing number 1 cylinder on drivers side and ours is on the passengers side. We are postive we are on number 1 cylinder because we pulled number 1 spark plug out, pulled up on compression stroke and the piston is at TDC and the crank shaft mark was lined up on 0 and piston is on TDC.

Re: IMPORTANT!! Ingition Timing Trouble
I don't know the exact steps (don't have a manual), but once you find TDC of cylinder #1, you need to set the cam lobes for #1 to what the manual says. You will need to pull a valve cover to do this. If your cam sprockets got rotated out of sequence with one another, you'll need to set the 2,4,6 bank the same way as well.

We have followed the Chiltons book exactly and it does not work. Thanks for your help anyway.

Re: IMPORTANT!! Ingition Timing Trouble
If you had the cam/vlv covers off & verified cam lobe position with TDC for each bank, your valve timing cannot be off.

Re: IMPORTANT!! Ingition Timing Trouble
I'm still not clear if he wants to set ignition timing or valve timing. If it's ignition timing, it CANNOT be adjusted. The computer controls the ignition timing. Maybe you have the spark plug wires installed wrong?

Good call! I didn't catch that. He might have it timed totally arse backwards! Good thing they are non-interference.Joel
