OT: Wiring up computer speakers

Ok, so I got these old computer speakers out of the basement that my brother said was no good. Hooked em all up and they worked great. Only one problem... The wire connecting the left speaker to the right speaker (right speaker is the control speaker) had the plug (jack?) cut off and I'm unable to plug it in now. So, I got to looking and decided that headphone plugs were the same type that was being used on these. I cut all the wires and stripped em and ran into a problem... The donor plug has some wires surrounding the internal insulation and when I wire it up to the internal wires it doesn't work. So I assumed maybe the surrounding wires were like a ground. So I tried that and it still doesn't work... So, I got out an rca cable and touched the speaker wires to the left and right of the rca cables and they go to a mono channel so I plugged it into the right speaker and it worked fine. But, it couldn't keep a good enough connection to work all the time. So I cut that wire and found out that its the same as the headphone plug... Now I have no idea what to do. Does anybody have any other ideas how to wire this thing up?

Re: OT: Wiring up computer speakers

Well, I considered buying the new 5400's from Logitech but then I realized why do that when these ones are just as good. lol They are some old Altec Lansings and the sub hits like craaaazy. I only run it at half power because thats too much for me and I do like bass too. It's like a 300 watt system. It's pretty sweet. I just figured it would be nice to use these for a while until I actually have extra money to spend on some new speakers.

Re: OT: Wiring up computer speakers

Oh, no I didn't think you snapped at me at all man. I just got home from a buddys place though and I sold him my old tower speakers and went out and bought a brand new sony surround system. I already have a nice sony amp too though, so I sold the new amp and made some more money off it too. lol But yeah, I can use those now for the time being. It would be nice to at least try and get the wires fixed on these other speakers though so I can sell them or use them. Anyone else have any ideas? lol

Re: OT: Wiring up computer speakers

I would wire it up car audio style . Sorry for the huge topic change but this reminded me of something. Do any of you listen to music as you sleep/fall asleep? My friend laid his speakers on nightstands on either side of his bed and faced them towards the ceiling. When you turn on the music and lay down on the bed, the sound bounces off the ceiling and comes back at you, but it sounds really good. Its like a good surround sound system, you cant really tell where the sound is coming from. Then you can but a L7 under your bed and you would have one rock ass bed system!

I'm an electronic tech and might be able to help you with the wires. Can you take a picture of them, if I can see what your wires look like I can tell you how to make them work, as long as they are good.

Yeah, I'm getting my camera back from my girlfriend around noon and then I'll be able to take a picture for better detail. I'll post it up as soon as I can.
