95 Transmission Limp Mode

I realize that this problem has been gone over many times on this board and I've read many of the posts related to transmission problems but still can't seem to fix mine.

I have replaced both input and output speed sensors and shift solenoid. I read several posts regarding a wiring splice from the factory that can cause the problem I'm having. Is there anyone that can tell me where the splice is or if there is anything internal that can cause these transmissions (A604) to not complete the shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Instead of going into 3rd gear, my transmission shifts to neutral and then when the speed of the vehicle slows it goes into limp mode. Other than this problem, my transmission seems to take gear fine, reverse and drive with no slipping.

Also if there is a trouble code stored in the transmission computer does it need to be cleared before it will work properly after changing these parts? If so, how?

If this information has already been posted on the board I would appreciate it if someone could direct me to it regarding said splice or any internal problems that can cause this.

The best thing to do is to have someone scan the codes on the computer and see what you are up against. There was a service bulleting on loose connectors on the parts you replaced...go back and check them out closely.

I have a 1993 Plymouth caravan with 280,000 km (173,000 miles) and I bought it 3 years ago (1995) knowing the problem with the electronic transmission. I think that most of the problems are GROUNDS !! What a lot of car owners and mechanics don't realize is that the grounds on the cars cause more problems than anything else. I have personally owned and worked on over 400 cars and trucks and found that with the advent of computers, if your ground wires are not cleaned and protected from rust and corrosion then you will have problem after problem with your vehicle. I live in Canada and we have some of the harshest weather in the world and one thing that has happened on my vehicles is that rust and corrosion work on the electrical contacts and cause 90% of problems. I have added extra ground wires to my 93 caravan, from the battery to the alternator bracket, from the alternator bracket to the inside fender passenger side body, from the alternator bracket to the firewall, from the battery ground to the drivers side inner fender. After adding these extra ground wires and cleaning the old grounds I then covered them with anti-seize compound and that will protect them against corrosion and rust. Since doing all this I have not had one instance of "limp mode" fopr the last 9 months, before this I would have one to 3 times a week. It is the cheapest "fix" that a lot of people including mechanics don't know about or don't want to tell you about it !!!!

I had a 95 that did the same thing, my van had a 3.0 with the 4 speed, I swapped it out for a 3.0 3 speed. After taking the 4 speed transmission apart, there was a mechanical failure inside the transmission. More than likely that is what is going on with yours, if there was some problem with the solenoids, the computer would not even attempt to shift at all, that is why after you turn the ignition off and back on (to reset the computer) it will start in 1st, shift to 2nd, and then when it tries to shift to 3rd drops out and then into limp mode. Electrical problems would result in limp mode all the time.
