Re: targa conversion

If you are buying a 90-96 300ZX then just about all of them came with the T-Top, the "slick top" standard roof versions are actually quite rare.

If I remember correctly 84-89s had them as an option, I don't know how widely available it was. DeleriousZ or LonglivetheZ could tell you more about that.

How hard? No clue. The entire roof structure might be different. However I can't really see you having to worry about it since no matter what year you want you can usually find a T-Top pretty easy.

Re: targa conversion

Just a bit of advice, dont do it.
a slick top, hard top, non-T-Top Zs roof has not been reinforced to deal with the lack of extra metal to coupe with the chassis flex. The T-tops roof is quite a bit different than a non-t-top.

Not to mention, I know of probly about 1000 Z owners who would kill you if you chopped up a perfectly good slick top to make ANOTHER T-top.

if you are talking about a Z32, if you started with a T-top version, i bet it wouldnt take all that much to change it to a targa top. it should pretty much reinforced because of the t-tops; you would probably just have to re-enforce it parallel with the body.

Re: targa conversion

yeah man, i am assuming you have a slick-top. sell the slick top and get a t-tops one. you shouldnt have any problem on getting rid of the slick top...those are in high demand due to the fact that they weigh much less than a t-top version because of all the extra suport that is needed to support the open roof.

good luck man..

Re: targa conversion

i dont have one yet, im going to get a loan in about 7 weeks and buy a 300, now that i kn ow there is a significant weight difference it doesnt bother me weather its flat top or t top, and those 2 300's are NOTHING like what i want i like this, but deeper dish rims and sideskirts needed.

Re: targa conversion

Finding a Slick top is hard in the states, but I guess by your profile you live outside the US, so finding a slicktop is a bit easier, not a hole heap load but a bit. And the picture back a few of the two Zs, both are the same type of T-Top. Just the picture is a bad one for the top one so its hard to tell the difference.

I suggest getting a loan for about 10-12k for a decent Twin-turbo, or about
7k for a decent NA Z. Now for a slicktop you might as well add about 1-4 thousand on to that total depending on year and condition. I have seen 1 slick top in my life for sale in person, and he wanted 15k for it. It was a 94 NA AT, with 85k miles on the clock cloth interior but in perfect shape otherwise. That thing sold faster than I could run a carfax report on it.
