Cool Gettin' my nerd stuff 2morrow

Well that's what UPS says at least. I bought a programmer, chip adapter, and flash chip. I already have a labtop, an ALDL cable, and WinALDL for datalogging so I'm gonna start burning my own chips, hopefully, by this weekend. My mods are in my sig and I'm going to see just how hypertech stands up to my custom bin

It is going to take a while for me to get the feel of what the engine wants and what to modify, but I have been reading pretty heavy on some tuning tech articles on TBI ECMs and it doesn't look too incredibly hard, just A LOT of info to know. Once I stat to get it all together I'm going to take my l03 up to the 8th mile track in Natural Bridge, VA to see what I run. It's a small little track up in the woods and on an average night you can get in anywhere from 10-25 runs if you wanted to, so it should be a good place to test and tune. I'll make a few passes with the stock chip, the hypertech thermomaster, and my flash chip and post the results up here when I'm done. I'm also trying to decide if I want to spend the extra money to try out bryan's chips from tbichips.com to see how they compare, but I doubt I'll do it. I'll also post my mpg changes between each chip.

This should give a pretty good idea of the differance between the different options for tbi chip tuning. It also should help people modding tbi on the forum to get a feel for just how good off the shelf chips are compared to DIY chips. Then they can have more info and real results when choosing which route to take. I'm hoping the DIY is gonna kick sh** outa hyperjunk, but it all depends on how well I can learn the system. It's gonna be fun racing and programming against hypertech, just hope I can do it.

It doesn't take a while inbetween each chop for the ECM to recalibrate based on the new tables to run everything corredtly?

Well that sounds like it should be fun, once I get some mods for my T/A I am also going to be trying to do the programing myself. It will be intresting to see the results...

Thats awesome. Would love to be able to burn my own chips. Just spent alot of money of suspension parts. Oh well. Maybe i'll see if i can get a free dyno tune when i go to scholl. Good luck with the chip tuning Nate.

I was wondering that too. It might be because of the fact that when you make a change, like headers or filter, and you get on it a few times it starts to run better. But what you change in the bin allows the "self learning" of the tbi code to be more spot on. Like the computer is always trying to keep the BLMs in the 128 range, the "self learning" adjusts the tabes to try to keep this but there is a limit to how much it can adjust. This is where the modification to the chip is needed. So it's like readjusting the recalibration of the ECM if that makes sense. I'm still just learning this stuff myself so I could be wrong.

oops that was supposed to read "doesn't it...." But seems you got the question.

I would think your fuel trim would be out of whack for a bit is what I'm thinking and you might not get fair numbers from being outside of the optimum trim on the rich or lean side?

Re: Gettin' my nerd stuff 2morrow

Yea I think that might be a problem. I can only go the track one day out of the week so maybe I'll put in one tune and drive it for a week, race it, then put the other tune in the next day and drive it for a week and test it at the end of that week. That'll probably give me better results.
