Starter bushing replacement

What is the best way to get the old starter bushing out and a new one in. I am doing this for my neighbor and I have no experience working with VWs but I have worked on other cars. There is very little material left as far as I can tell.

1962 Beetle with a 12volt starter

Thanks

Re: Starter bushing replacement

The easiest way is to use the jen-U-wine VW bushing removal tool. But at about 45 bucks, it's not cost effective for a one-shot deal.

You can use a bottoming tap (squared end, not pointed) of appropriate size and thread it into the brass bushing. When the tap bottoms out on the trans case it will draw the bushing out. Just make sure the tap is in straight.

Put the new bushing in the freezer overnight. Add a light coat of synthetic grease to the new bushing and it will slide right in. If it's stubborn going in, tap it (gently) with a hard rubber mallet to help it along.
