Greetings,

There are times when I put the car in Drivethat it idles way down and it cuts off. The idle also goes up and down while sitting still. Any experience with this?

Take brake cleaner and shoot it around the intake manifold, you may have a vacuum leak.

Thanks for the info. I let a mechanic look at it. He checked all the vacuum lines. He determined it was the idle control motor going bad. Hopeflly, that's all it is.

Hi
Another thing to check is the crankcase ventilation valve, if the diaphragm is damaged or worn, the valve will not regulate th eengine pressure correctly causing a rough or erratic idle, and sometimes some smoling during driving. This can be reaplaced cheaply and easily by a relative amateur, as opposed to paying BMW to take the engine out, or remove the inlet manifold in order to do the swap!
