Question Diesel golf, gti, jetta

I am looking at possibly having a 45 mile commute this summer. I want something that gets good fuel mileage (40+ MPG). So I was considering a Diesel Golf, GTI(if they're made), or a Jetta. I would like a 2-door in the case that I got a Golf. What trims/packages came with a 2-door configuration. Also what years have turbo diesels(any?). Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Diesel golf, gti, jetta

I currently own a 2000 Golf 2 door TDI (Diesel). As far as I know, the TDI has been offered in Rabbits, Golfs and Jettas for at least the last 20 years here. I cant tell you much about trim levels, but I do know that the TDI and GTI are different, distinct models (there are no diesel GTI's). I bought mine used last year as a commuter, and it took me 9 months to find the one I was looking for. It is a 5 speed (better mileage than Automatic), 2 door, no frills (manual windows, manual mirrors, cloth seats, etc). To date the worst mileage I have seen is right now, running the winter blend diesel (48mpg). In the summer I saw just over 52mpg. The diesel engine specific to my Mk4 Golf was the same one found in all Golf & Jetta TDI models from 1999-2003. From what I have read, this version is very highly reguarded.
If you have any specific questions, I have collected a bit of info related to the TDI's - feel free to email me at [email protected]

Re: Diesel golf, gti, jetta

The diesels came in all generations of VW's.
88-91, 93-99, and 99.5-2005 - Golf and Jetta.
All Golfs are available in 2-door and 4-door
From 93+ All Jetta models became 4-door
From 99.5+ the New beetles also came Diesel equipped
Look for any TDi badging

***NOTE It is normal that Diesel motors are noisy at idle.
