chugging along

I have a 95 grand am with 189,000 miles and as I was driving it up a hill at 60mph it felt like it was chugging along once i accelerated (pedal all the way down) it stopped but would continue again hill after hill. any ideas will help a lot

this an automatic or manual?
If its an auto check the trans fluid level and if its dark and smelling funny. Could need a fluid and filter change.

But if its a manual, check the fluid level on the clutch.

This could also indicate a faulty/dirty IAC, or a vacum leak on the intake, or some thing to do with the fuel system. Like a fuel filter cloged or the fuel pumps weak(check fuel pressure).

Since it is acting up so much on the hills, I would suspect that it would be a fuel filter. It sounds like the classic symptom for a clogging fuel filter. I would start there, but I would also check the other items listed by Xeroinfinity.The replacement filter is not too expensive, if you are going to do the job yourself you will most likely need a special tool to release the filter from the fuel lines. If you decide to do the job yourself be very careful it is a messy job and you will probably get gas on yourself.
Even if it turns out that the fuel filter is not the main issue, with 189,000 miles it would be a smart thing to so simply because of the number of times you have had to put gas in the tank.

I am recomending this on the assumption that the fuel filter could be the original filter.
