Re: 97 gpt s/c car shuts of while driving

Yes it could be a wiring problem. They pinched a wire installing the trannie.
I have seen many go back to the trannie shop because they pinched a wire my guess is one going to a sol. If it worked before and they won't look at it, you are stuck paying someone else to look at it. If they do find a pinched wire you can try to collect from AAmco. One of the real gr.prix experts here can tell you if it could be anything else.

Re: 97 gpt s/c car shuts of while driving

Concentrate on the DTC error codes. The tranny uses throttle position sensor (TPS) data via the PCM module to determine shifting. The TPS is stuck low or providing a constant low voltage output. The TPS is located on the throttle body and very easy to replace.

What was the crank position sensor (CKPS) error code? A bad CKPS will cause the engine to shut off. Sometimes right before shutdown you may notice the tach dropping off to zero rpms. This is because the 18X pulses from the CKPS are acting up which feeds the ignition control module and taps off to the tach.

Also, check your charging system and make sure battery and alternator are good. Check connections and condition of battery cables. Many tranny shops do not connect the grounds properly or omit them when replacing the tranny. Check all grounds located at the engine/tranny grounding stud. Located at driver's side of tranny, radiator side of engine.

Also, check the electrical connector at the TPS and CKPS. The one at the CKPS can get corrosion in the contacts both sensor and connector sides.

I Just Came Back From Aamco And They Told Me It Might Have Been A Pre Existing Problem They Want To Check The Wiring And Charge Me 65 An Hour ($130 Total To Check If They Can Find The Problem)

Before you took it into AAMCO what was your problem. Obvious you had tranny work. Did you have any of these problems before? If AAMCO caused the problem then they should be responsible and make them perform under warranty, if any. How are they going to prove it was a pre-existing problem?

Out of curiosity what did they charge you for the tranny work?

Exclamation Re: 97 gpt s/c car shuts of while driving

yeah i had the same problem the trans would not shift into second gear
they told me i needed a new trans so i replaced it they put a used trans in there it costed about 1,200 dollars the day i went to pick it up they told me that the trans was not shifting and they had to fix a wire from the tps sensor i left the car overnight went back the next day and picked up the car.
it ran fine for a couple days then one day i noticed the tach was dead and then the car started boging out it finally died . when i tried to start the car it did not start after about 20 minutes it finally turned over and then the trans would not shift into 2nd i checked all the wires near the tps , mass air flow sensor and the main wire into the trans everything looked good so i tried to drive the car and everything was fine it was shifting fine then on my way to aamco it died again and the exact same thing happened.

So your original problem was not shifting into second gear. AAMCO replaces the tranny with a used one and it was having problems including not shifting to second. Sounds like they were trying to cover their rear ends by claiming you had wiring problems and had misdiagnosed your problem.

Anyways, based on your symptoms...the engine shutting off, hard starting and the dead tach sounds like the crank position sensor (CKPS) is bad. Replace it and it should resolve these issues. Good luck!

BTW - The CKPS is located on the passenger side of engine right behind the harmonic balancer pulley. You'll see the electrical connector to the right.
