How much was your gear change?

My stock gears are 3.03. I want to get 3.73 or 4.10 gears but the shops are quoting me $800. Where did you get your gears changed and how much did it cost? What do I say when I am asking the shop if they do it, do I ask if they change the rear differential gears?

I do highway driving twice a month, should I go with 4.10? If necassary, I can switch cars with my mom the two times I go on the highway to keep it off. What do you think?

Re: How much was your gear change?

That gear ratio is the rear differential gears.

I'd say go with 4.10s without a doubt.

I just picked up a complete rear already assembled for 300... when its all said and done youre're looking at around 300 in parts (if youre just doing gears, not posi) and then 3-400 in labor. That's around here at least.

Re: How much was your gear change?

Well, I just purchased this: a Limited Slip Differential, and 4.10 gears for $350ish. How much do you think it would be to install this stuff? Anyone do this in the Chicagoland area?

Re: How much was your gear change?

I've seen people get prices like 200.00 which is a very good deal but what year is this for cause on some years it would require new reluctor ring and posi unit but if its a second gen then you could very well already have a 3 series.

Re: How much was your gear change?

Alright it is a 1996. I'm still getting ridiculously high quotes. Anyone know of someone who will do this in the Chicago area? I was hoping to spend no more then $350 on install... I've called Aamco ($881) a local transmission shop ($600) and my local Chevy dealer (won't do it). I can't seem to find someone to do it for my price range.

Re: How much was your gear change?

Usually if you provide the gears and install kit they will have a much better price... then again some shops wont work with parts they didnt order for liability issues.

There's a shop at Maple(17th St.) & 31st in LaGrange Park/Brookfield, can't think of the name right now, but they have a sign up and i remember it being decent.

Otherwise I would say bring over a couple cases of brew and if your extremely religious a pair of ear plugs

Re: How much was your gear change?

Haha, thanks wrightz28. Well, I just found a shop that might do it for $200!!!! If that falls through I may just take you up on your offer. Oh, and I'm not religious. One thing though, I'm 17 so you'd have to supply the brew ;-)

Re: How much was your gear change?

Just make sure the shop has done it before and that you trust them
