Replaced Altenator x3, car overcharging
1996 Aurora
first my "air bag" and "service vehicle soon" warnings lit up. then "check charge system" warning came on. shortly thereafter altenator failed. replaced the altenator, within 30 miles it burned up again. with same warnings and idiot light coming on 10 miles before altenator shuts down. replaced 2nd time, same problem. my local electrical guru states that i am just getting bad altenators with bad voltage regulators. replaced 3rd time with a ACDelco instead of a O'reilly-Bosch, and same problem persists. i'm fed up, so i undid the power wire and guage plugs and i'm about to take it to a dealership? any advice? current altenator still working, but now its unplugged. anyone have any advice what-so-ever? |

Re: Replaced Altenator x3, car overcharging
go to some auto parts store that has a tester stand. Have replacement tested before you leave with it.
Ive heard that running one with disconnected leads will fry it. Check all connections to see if they are OK. LMK how it works out I need one on one of my 95s. My 96 had one replaced while under warranty. Ive had alot of 95 Firebird ones replaced with a lifetime warranty from Pepe Boys. Best investment Ive ever made. Funny how it takes on 10 minutes to replace the Firebird one. Ive heard that dealer gets $600 to do an Aurora one. Quote:

Re: Replaced Altenator x3, car overcharging
Hi there. I don't know if you still have your Olds Aurora, but if you do, you probably sold it or had someone figure out the overcharging problem. I just ran into the same thing, and a mechanic figured it out. There is a Battery Thermistor that attaches to the Positive Battery pole, that senses battery temperature, and decides where to charge the battery based off battery temperature. They do this to make it so that Battery vapors don't get into the car because the battery is under the rear seat. Anyway, if that is sensing too low of a value, it will WAY overcharge. If it is over 12 volts, it won't charge at all. It's supposed to be around 11.2 volts............Anyway. If you order the part from the dealer, you need to ask for a Battery Temperature Sensor, that attaches to the Positive pole on the battery under the rear seat; they won't call it a Thermistor like the Aftermarket repair Software does. Anyway............good luck. And anyone else who has an overcharing problem on an Oldsmobile Aurora, hope this helps!
