P0341 and P1404

I get the P1404 code about once a month or so, and I ignore it usually, today was different. I was cruising up the freeway and pulled off after driving about 2 hours. I stopped at a light, then started to drive and the van died. I pulled over and started it and it started right up. The SES light had been on since I started the drive, and was still on. So I continued back home and as I got home it started to have problems accelerating. I got home and bought tuneup stuff, but decided to get the codes pulled to see what it was doing. I am now also getting the P0341 code, however the SES light is now off. Are there any suggestions as to what to do next. I know the P1404 is EGR Valve, and the P0341 is Cam Position Sensor, but do I need to replace them both? Will this solve my problems?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jeff

Re: P0341 and P1404

P1404 is Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Pintle Stuck Open. Cleaning the EGR valve may be enough to fix the problem or you may need to replace the EGR Valve completely.

P0341 is Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance. This is likely the cause of your vehicle dying. If it can't sense where the cam shaft currently is, it plays it safes and just shuts down the engine instead of guessing and firing at the wrong time. This could have been a fluke, it also could have been a sign of problems yet to come. It's a fairly easy part to replace if memory serves me correctly (but I may be wrong). It's located in the valley on the top of the block on the passenger side of the vehicle. You can see a picture of the location here The picture was from when I did my heads, you shouldn't have to go down that far though. You may need to remove the PS pump out of the way (fairly easy) or the intake manifold (fairly difficult)...I'd have to look.

Re: P0341 and P1404

Ok, so last year I replaced the spark plugs, and the problem seemed to go away! Yeah!!!!

But low and behold, it came back this year. It got worse and worse to where it was stalling while driving. Then would hesitate. So I replaced the cam pos sensor. Light went off and all was good. Then after about 3 days....light on again, same code P0341, cam pos sensor. I tried several other items, replaced all plug wires with autolite hi-performance, cleaned coil pack towers, measured resistance and they all checked good, two (1 and 5) had pitting and rust on them. Took it out and did fine for about 10 minutes, then light on and the thing stalled and almost died on me. Could I have gotten a faulty sensor from the parts store? What else should I try? Should I replace the 1/4 and 5/2 coils?
