84 delta 98 starting problems.
So I've owned the widowmaker for about a year, and just lately it has been doing this strange thing where it will start fine, but when I shift it into gear it dies instantly. It restarts again, but just keeps dying until by luck it will finally catch and I will be able to go. It also dies if I stop with it in gear, so I've been putting it in neutral while rolling up to lights. It doesn't seem to do it if I've been driving it for half an hour, but I never drive it that long, which makes the car obsolete. The only other way I can get it going is to rev it high then throw it into gear, which sounds and looks cool, but probably isn't too good for the drive train or the rubber. Anybody know whats wrong with it, because I'm no mechanic, or a rich man.

Carbuerated cars are notorious for this. You have to let the motor warm up. IThe problem witth it stalling at stops is a mystery to me. However if it's not warmed up, it might be your problem. Make sure the preheater hose is intact and that the thermac on the air snorkel is working right.

Your carburetor's choke pull-off is not working. Look for a leaking vacuum diaphram or loose vacuum line.
When this goes bad, your choke will close too much when the engine idles in gear.

the easiest way to check the pull off is take the vacuum line oof the end of the "front" pull-off, push down the lever arm on the pull-off and then put your finger over the hole if the lever stys put the pull-off is ok if it goes back up its bad. if it is bad a new one is about 12.00, DO NOT adjust it it does have a screw dont touch it while you are there change the vacuum line, cheap insurance. you really don't need the thermac it usually goes bad within a couple of years anyway, just make sure the flap is in the open position if it does not work. when the new pull-off is in make sure the choke butterfly(front) opens about 1/8 inch this is the ideal opening for it.
