Damaged transfer case?

I need some help please. I drive a 2001 2500 express as a work van. It has been in my possesion only a few months and ever since then, the steering wheel was always off meaning it drives straight when the wheel is about 45 degrees to the right. I figured it was the alignment. Anyways, the boss of the company I work for (small company) needed the van for a job. Needless to say, my boss calls me yesterday after having it the whole weekend and asks me if I ever hit anything. He took it to a dealership and they told him the transfer case was damaged and this is why the steering wheel is off center. I was not outright accused but my boss sure wasn't nice about it either. Does this diagnosis even sound correct. I know it is not a lot of info to go off of and no i NEVER hit anything. Received the van as is, maybe my fault for not bringing it to their attention. Thanks!
