Replacing starter in 92 4runner
Hey I was wondering how you go about replacing the starter in a 92. Where is it located, and is it possible to replace it on your own?
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! |

What engine ??
If it's the 4 cyl (22RE) it's on the pass side bottom rear of the motor. Easy DIY fix. Make sure to disconnect the batt cables first.

Re: Replacing starter in 92 4runner
I believe that the V-6 is in the same general location. One thing that makes it easier is to put the right side of the vehicle on jack stands and then remove the tire. That way you can get in there. Also, right where the bottom of the fender is, you'll see an access panel that can be removed by 4 or 5 bolts. When you take that off, it really opens up your work area.

Re: Replacing starter in 92 4runner
DICONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST THING!!!!
Use a combination of your longest 3/8 drive extensions to get your ratchet in front of the motor mount, do this from the top side leaning over the fender, this is to remove the top bolt, remove the wires from the top side also when you get BOTH bolts removed you can rotate the starter to gain access to the terminals. The bottom bolt is on the transmission side this one you will need to be under the truck, then go back topside and undo the wiring. You will have to move transmission cooling lines if you have an automatic, one of the mounts for the lines actually uses the starter bolt to anchor. Don’t forget to reattach this when installing the starter. I have a 92 and there is no need to remove the tire or raise the truck, in fact raising the truck will put your work further away from you when you are underneath. Once completely disconnected the starter drops out through the bottom. It is not the simplest DIY job but anyone with a 3/8 ratchet set can do it. It will take the better part of a morning to do it. You can do this, seriously. Good luck Last edited by 4Wheel; 02-08-2006 at 05:38 PM. |
