Question 93 civic speedometer not working

so the past month or so the speedometer on my girlfriends 93 civic has been working off and on (more off than on). we dont know what the problem is and we dont have the money to have a pro look at it. the only symptom is a weird wizzing noise when it accelerates. any help would be great please contact me at [email protected]

Re: 93 civic speedometer not working

I will confirm that. I had a 94 DX which I had to replace the gauge cluster at 196K. I currently have a 93 DX with 203K and the speedometer is acting up, so I plan on replacing the gauge cluster on that also.

It is not that difficult of a job considering what you are replacing. I thought it would be much worse than it was.

2 years ago I bought the gauge cluster from a junk yard for $20, of course you are taking a gamble that you are getting a decent one. good luck

Re: 93 civic speedometer not working

Same deal here on a 93 sedan.
I was not getting any vss codes, so it had to be speedo.
I just took speedo out of cluster, and replaced the pc board and gear motor on back so my mileage would be same.
Be sure to take screw out of surround for dash cluster behind emergency flasher switch.

92 up has no speedo cable. VSS unit on trans goes to pc board and drive motor on back of speedo in cluster.

Re: 93 civic speedometer not working

Lmfao. Nice. I did read a lot about Civics and the gauge clusters not working. Ebay has them used for pretty cheap. And 90% are "JDM" :-P

Re: 93 civic speedometer not working

  • Switch to a double volute pump design.
  • Install a pump discharge bypass line back to the storage tank, such as the type commonly used on boiler feed pumps.
  • Convert to a low L3/D4 pump design that will operate in a wide window.
  • Install a support bushing in the end of the stuffing box, move the seal closer to the bearings and accept a small amount of shaft deflection.
  • And the big question, "How about a variable speed drive"?
