Re: 2000 suburban timing procedure
Is the new motor out of a 2000? I have the factory manuals at home but I don't think they offered a 350 in 2000. Should have been a 5.3 or 6.0. My 5.3 has a distributorless ignition so the timing is completely computer controlled.
Did you install a new computer with the big block? The computers may be the same between the big and small block but the program is most likely different. Does your 454 have a distributor? //2000CAYukon |

Re: 2000 suburban timing procedure
If the 454 has a distribitor,the timing is NOT adjustable.The cam sensor is inside the distribitor and the check engine light will go on if you mess with the timing.You set the distribitor with a scan tool such as a GM Tech 2,etc

Is there a trick to getting the distributor to drop in correctly? I replaced the lower intake gasket and I am stuck at the distributor, I can feel the gears line up but the oil pump slot does not seem to drop in place. I set the engine to TDC on number 1 piston lined up the rotor and no dice it just does not want to drop all the way.
Any tips or tricks would be very much appreciated. Jer |

Re: 2000 suburban timing procedure
Did you move the engine after the dist was removed, if so the oil pump drive is not lined up as a result.

Re: 2000 suburban timing procedure
Very big lesson I learned years ago was to mark 3 things on the dist. 1. relationship of the dist as a whole to the firewall, eng, or whatever. 2. rotor position to the dist "before" you loosen it or pull it. 3. rotor position to the dist after you pull it straight up. You might notice as you're trying to put it back in that the rotor wants to rotate as it starts meshing with the cam gear. Same applies as you pull it out, the rotor turns (I think ccw) as you pull it out. So if you "did not" rotate the motor with the dist out try backing up the rotor ccw from the #1 position about 1 1/2 inch and try again.
You never really said what year and motor you're working on since the original post are 8 months old. Like "Max" says it's most likley the oil pump shaft slot is not lining up with the dist.

Re: 2000 suburban timing procedure
Thanks guys;
Problem resolved - embarassed after 4+ hours working on it, I crammed my head near the FW enough to look down to the oil pump slot and could not figure out what the bolt down there was for. It was sitting just perfect to look like it actually belonged there. After fishing with a magnet I just laughed. Needless to say I went to #1 piston TDC and lined up the slot and it is seated properly, I'm not quite finished so I havbe to wait to check the timing. btw way it is a 1996 350 5.7 it has 172,000 miles on it and this was the first gasket replacement so I think I lucked out. P.S. Anyone have issues with breaking the poppet clips that surround the injectors? I cracked 3 and had to replace the entire injector. Is there a way to replace just the poppet clip? Thanks again guys. |
