turbo blown, time for an upgrade?

The stock turbo on my talon tsi blew the other day..im looking to upgrade but I don't want to spend too much on parts and such...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EVO-3...temZ8035114673

i was looking at this one off ebay...anyone have any experience with this?
Will i need to upgrade anything else besides the fuel pump or get any more fittings?
And how hard would it be to install?

A big no to that one. The seller is SSAutoChrome. Do a search and you'll find TONS of bad press not only on this forum but all over the internet. You don't want to cheap out on a turbo because doing so could cost you an engine. Spend the $200 more and do it right from a reputable vendor.

I've got an EVO3 on mine with limited mods. You can do it, but you can't expect a great increase if you only raise boost to safe levels. It will require intake, exhaust, fuel and tunig upgrades to have it really wow you.

If you are looking for a solid upgrade you can grow into, go with an EVOIII or T-28. If you are looking for a track monster, go with a 50 trim or 20g. If you are looking a budget beast, go 14b.

I love talking about turbos. Would probably talk about them all day with people if I could, but it all fall's into what you want out of your car. And you know that. What do you want to spend & do you want an internal WG?

Re: turbo blown, time for an upgrade?

I really don't want that much more horse, I just want a little something more so I don't blow it again. Here's a list of my mods:
Intake tube with K&N air filter
3"turbo back exhaust
Boost controller
HKS sequential BOV
Boost, air/fuel ratio, oil pressure gauges
ACT 2100 clutch

So i guess dishing out another 200 bucks would be worth it

Re: turbo blown, time for an upgrade?

yea i def wount go with an ebay turbo personally. i like www.slowboyracing.com for their turbos. they have many kinds of turbos for a resonable price, and you know ur gonna get a good turbo. like they all said depends on what you are looking for. most will just go with a 16g turbo... sbr has a good kit for the 2g for only $1000.

Re: turbo blown, time for an upgrade?

See if you can't get a 14b for $100 shipped. It's logical for what your wanting to spend, and is a really good turbo! All you'll need is the J-pipe and oil line. You can file the return line, swap the water lines, bend them a smidge and your golden. Pick up a Carbide bit and port your manifold and o2 while your at it. All for under $150. Fun stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the same turbo they're selling on SBR? If not, has anyone heard anything good/bad about this company/turbo?

To add on to that, I got the flapper upgrade, an SS oil line, all gaskets for a turbo swap (exhaust to manifold, O2, j-pipe) and everything overnighted to me for about $800

that sounds like a good deal....why would I need a ported inlet and outlet? And where did you find the supporting mods?

Porting allows for better flow. You can do it yourself if you feel comfortable and have the right tools. I think there is a VFAQ on it (www.vfaq.com). To max out the turbo, you will eventually have to port it so it is best to do before putting it on.

Supporting mods usually come from a variety of places depending on the type of mod. It also depends on what you are trying to support. I run the EVO16g and very low boost levels just fine with zero knock. Let us know what you want to get out of it, and we can all make suggestions on how to get there. Run some searches first though because there is a TON of stuff on AF about the EVO16g turbo and supporting mods.

To generate the most power, you are looking at intake, exhaust, boost control, fuel, and engine management mods to be very general.

Re: turbo blown, time for an upgrade?

I've been shopping around and searching all morning and I think I'm going to go with the MHI EVO III 16G off of SBR. I already have intake, exhaust, boost controller, and boost gauge. I know I'm going to need the 2g install kit. I will probably need an upgraded fuel pump, but what about injectors? The stock ones on my talon are 450cc I believe. Is it really needed to upgrade the injectors also?

I don't want to spend over 1000 all together for this, so I was thinking if the MHI EVO III 16G and everything that comes with it exceeds 1000, then maybe I would go with the small 16g. It says on SBR that it's a direct bolt on. Does this mean I don't need the 2g kit or what?!

p.s. Thanks for all your input my fellow dsm'ers!
