Gas gauge is broken

I broke down on the expressway because I ran out of gas, that was embarrassing...but It didn't say I had no gas either. What are the possible problems with the gauge. How can I fix it? Thanks

the oem 240sx gauges are not very accurate, my car ran for 20 mins when it was below zero, so i have no idea, i guess they are magnetically weight towards the center or whatever like most oem cars...
