Strange problems in 97 Blazer

I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 97 Blazer (4-dr., 2WD) with 95,000 miles on it. The wipers either don't work or only work sometimes. They seem to have a mind of their own. Directionals don't work and I don't think it's a flasher unit. Gas gauge only gives an accurate reading when the engine is off. Otherwise it reads full all the time. Oil pressure gauge reads a steady 60 whether the engine is running or not. Temp is at 100 or below all the time, so that gauge is probably dead. I bought this vehicle in Puerto Rico and had a mechanic look at it. He says the gauge and wiper problems are traceable to a module or something like that in the steering console. He says the gas gauge problem is a different story, that it's the sensor in the tank. Can anyone shed any light on this? I'm quoted about 275 for the module and about 400 for the fuel sensor. I checked out the faq section here and didn't see anything. If this stuff has been discussed before here at length, my apologies. Thanks for any help.

Re: Strange problems in 97 Blazer

OK, I found earlier threads dealing with wipers, so no need for anyone to repeat all that. Still, can anyone offer advice about directionals, gas tank, and other gauges not working?

Check this link for level sensor part number, it's less than $100.00 from gmpartsdirect.com

Check you gauge fuse before replacing the ignition module.
If you still have the original module, it's a good idea ti replace it.
The ignition switch module is less than $100.00 at autozone. $130.00 from a dealer.
Here's a good link to replacing the switch.

Mike,

So is the source of the trouble the ignition switch module? Is that why the gauges aren't working correctly? Directionals too? By the way, thanks for the great links.

Re: Strange problems in 97 Blazer

I would agree with Mike, your ignition switch module is probably bad. THis is a fairly common problem with the Blazers. The swap out isn't too bad, and the How - To that Mike linked to are excellent.
Good luck.

The switch may be your problem, but usually the truck won't start or will quite running for no apparent reason, they gauges won't work, none of the dash lights will illuminate, and the fuel pump won't run.

That's why I suggested checking your fuses first.

Good luck.
