Key tumbler problem

on my '93 Camaro Z28...

The Key Tumbler was removed from the steerng colomn when I bought it. I got a new key from the chevy dealership but it doesn't turn the tumbler. The wires are still connected to the tumbler. The switch inside of teh colomn does not activate the starter. The fuel pump is also not pumping.

Is this part of the anti-theft system?

What do I need to do?

That problem sucks a guy I work with has an 02 ws6 and the anti theft wires in the tumbler broke. He had to get a knew tumbler and key. But you have to take the whole steering colum apart. Its not easy. theres bearings, lights, high beams its tough.

GAK! You don't have to take the whole column apart to change the ignition lock. Remove the air bag, steering wheel, air bag reluctor assembly and the screws that hold the turn signal switch. Carefully pull the turn signal switch up and flip it out of the way. Down in there on the right side is a lone phillips screw, back it out all the way then remove it with needle nose plyers. You'll notice that it has a long shaft on the end when you remove it. With the screw out you should be able to remove the lock, don't just jerk it out because it has wires connected to it. Disconnect the wire connector and replace the lock and reassemble in the reverse order.

I assume you had the dealer cut you a key by the VIN number? I also would guess you have a VATS style key with the chip in it.

Easiest thing to do is buy a new lock cylinder from the dealer and it will come coded with a brass key without a chip. You will need to your VATS code 2-15 whichever one it is, and have the new vats key ground to match the brass key that came with the new lock cylinder.

If you are unsure about what code your key should be GM can obtain it by the vin, unless someone has replaced the VATS module then you would need a tech to use the VATS interogator to determine the VATS code.

The car will not start until the key code resistance matches what the VATS module says it should be.

You can always try bypassing the vats system but I think one of the ignition wires isn't connected.
