small cubby in dash... any uses?

What in the heck was GM thinking when they put the small cubby to the left of the steering wheel on the '00-'05 Tahoes? It's even "sloped" outward so if you put something in there (like parking card or gas cards) it just falls out as soon as you take off!

I know some variations had switches or something there, but for those of us that don't, has anyone found a use for that little cubby?

I have an 03 Siverado it has the same little cuby hole and I have yet to find any use for it.
