Re: 1999 windstar a c/ problems

Welcome njd117,

Go back and check the vacuum lines controling the actuator door. The rear is a completely seperate evaporator than the front. The front evaporator still works, it just isn't being allowed to blow air past it.

Re: 1999 windstar a c/ problems

Isn't the blend door actuator electric as opposed to vacuum operated?

Re: 1999 windstar a c/ problems

Definately, the blend door for the 99 windstar is controlled electrically with an actuator that often goes bad (or in my case breaks the actuator door). Your blend door could be stuck so that all the air goes through the heater core and would seem like the a/c is not working. Is the compressor even trying to engage?

Re: 1999 windstar a c/ problems

My son's 2000 Windstar has similiar problem. No cold air comes out front dash vents when adjust temperature lever. Will put out hot air though. Back outlets will put out cold or hot air by adjusting the rear temperature lever. Compressor is running and cycling on/off. So my guess is the same problem as here? Found another posting about changing the actuator out by removing the radio. Is that the solution? Thanks Ken

Re: 1999 windstar a c/ problems

Before I bought a new blend door actuator, I'd remove it and with it still plugged in, test it to see if the shaft will rotate 90 degree when going from cold to hot, if it doesn't this may be a quick fix. If the actuator is not the problem, look to see if the piece that the actuator slides into is still there, in my case it was not, the female hole on the heater box should that accepts the male portion of the actuator assembly should have a square with one of the sides rounded to match the shape of the actuator male shaft. If it does not you too have a broken blend door like mine.

I'm not saying this is the 100% solution since my '99 only has the single zone heater and not dual temp controls for front and rear like yours. You might get the service manual and do some research. If you have a bit torrent client for your computer you can download a cdrom version of it off the web.

I had a problem with rear air that was curred when I replaced the rear Heat/Cool selector in the front console. Vacuum was not getting past it. You could have a similar problem with the front air selector knob, assuming it is also controled with air.
