Good school car?

Hey, Im lookin for a new car to get in the next year. And the Carlos have always caught my eye. I was lookin for maybe a 96'-99' year model. Do these car get very good gas mileage? I drive 50 miles a day. And what kind of power do they have?

Re: Good school car?

if you're a broke college student, a monte probably isn't the way to go. Mine gets about 20 mpg on it's good days. Just went through about $400 in repairs (new starter, intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets, coolant temp sensor etc.) Car looks and drives nice but expensive to maintain.

Re: Good school car?

I am a student and own a 96 monte LS. If I drive it hard, I get at worst 22 mpg. Normally around 26. So yeah, it's not the greatest on gas, but not terrible either. I drive about 65 miles round trip to and from school. As far as reliability, mine has 96K on it, and aside from regular maintenance I've only replaced the alternator. It's not a rocket, either, if you're looking for a power house. I wouldn't recommend a Z34 if you're looking for good reliability. Stick with an LS.

Re: Good school car?

Thanks for the help guys. I got a 94' bonneville right now. Would it be worth my money and all the work of moving my stereo system into it to buy a 97-99 monte?

Re: Good school car?

I've got an 02, get 20-24 city and 25-30 highway... so that part isn't bad. I've been having a lot of electrical issues though and if it weren't for the extended warrenty I'd be broke. A lot of the newer cars come with premium sound (I've got Bose in mine) so thats something to look into as well.

Re: Good school car?

Yeah.. try to look into getting a newer 00-04 than the earlier ones, since they do get better gas and are quicker.. and look alot more like a Monte Carlo than just another car.

Re: Good school car?

Yea I love the new ones. But I only have about 3 grand or so to spend on a car. We buy most of our cars at insurance salvage auctions or ebay and fix them up. Its sortof a hobby of me and my dads.

Re: Good school car?

you should get an older one. i have an 88 mc ss and it looks sharp, it flies, and with a 305 it still gets 15-18mpg.

I use to have a 88 MC SS. They are not what you want for a daily driver. Don't get me wrong, they are nice. I wish I had still had mine, but they get shit for MPG. My Silverado get 15-18 MPG. (which is expected). If you are going to get a v8 get a newer one with the DOD system. they are rated 18-28MPG. My reccomendation would be to stick with a V6 or smaller. Hell, I will sell you my Saturn. It gets 30MPG and it is a stick.
