no balls off the line ?

I have a 97 neon sohc and ever since I have had this one it has had no power from a dead stop up to about 15-20 mph, when already moving it has about the amount of power as it should, but nothing off the line. it is a automatic trans. I am about to perform a compresion test and check the kickdown band but I'm not sure if those could cause this problem. if you have any advise it would be appreciated.

thanx

Re: no balls off the line ?

Welcome to the crappy world of the ATX neon. There is probably nothing wrong with your compression, it's just that the ATX neon does not perform great from a stand still. There are some things you can try to help, like prothane inserts, install a shift kit, install a high stall converter, transfer gears, and a manual valve body. Unfortunately the ATX neon isn't very quick and can be outperformed by the MTX easily. Thats why alot of people swap in the MTX into their neon and instantly get quicker.

that what everyone says I know its true, but this is worse than it should be, I have driven numorous other ATX neons before and the power is nowhere near it should be, no torque at all. I am planning on swapping it to a manual, but would like to find out where this problem is coming from first. I brought it to a dealership, but got little help. I'll update you with the compression stats, as soon as I can get to it
thanx

p.s.

maybe the ECM?

I don't think the ECM has anything to do with the trannies on the first gen neons. But who knows? Try the compression check and you can probably get some answers fromn there.

Re: no balls off the line ?

Ever done a tuneup?

The Champion plugs should be changed every 15k-20k.

My ATX is quite peppy off the line. It is the 1-2 shift change is where it bogs.

well I did the compression test and this is what I got...

cylinder.. 1 2 3 4
compression... 190 200 190 200

then I added oil to check out the rings...

cylinder... 1 2 3 4
compression.. 265 240 .... ....

......then I blew an O-ring on the tester.

so the rings could be worn, but I think i added to much oil, so im not sure.
what is a healthy compression in a neon?

im gona check the fuel system (filter, injectors) and see if I can come up with somthing there. and then try and check every vacume line, I know I need to change a few emmisions parts , so maybe thats where the problem lies

Re: no balls off the line ?

Your first numbers are accurate, compression numbers are not taken by adding oil.

Good compression actually.

the oil is used to test the condition of the piston rings, its just a way of narrowing down your possible problems. but I used to much so it wasnt accurate anyway.

Re: no balls off the line ?

Your compression is really good for that engine.

Can't complain with those numbers.

thanks thats good to know.

yeah I have done a tune up, I checked fluids, changed some. replaced stock air filter with CAI. replaced vacume lines, spark plugs, ect....

still would like to get new coil and plug wires

I found some problems witht the Evap system, so im hoping thats all it is. wont have any extra money for like two weeks but then I should be geting a new evap purge selenoid, new lines, and maybe a new charcoal canister.

also I am doubting my iac valve, so I think i will replace it also.
ill update if I have any success

Re: no balls off the line ?

I would replace your IAC, just take the intake hose off of the throttle body and get and old toothbrush and spray the butterfly down with a little cleaner and scrub the top and underside.

Also spray cleaner into the IAC hole above the butterfly to dissolve any crud.

I hope your went with standard Champion plugs.

I know I should have used champion, but I tried splitfires this time.
yeah I have already cleaned the TB and IAC, but still no change. the IAC just seems to not be working.

Re: no balls off the line ?

oh,,,,my...god....

get those splitfires out and take them back.

Worst plug in the world.

NEVER EVER use them.

There is your performance problem right there.

No wonder, those plugs are junk.

Re: no balls off the line ?

Wel you won't be finding the real problem with defective plugs for sure.

What gap were you setting the champions too?
