FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
I finally got my headlight motors to at least work by replacing my headlight module. but now I am having a strange problem. One light goes up while the other one goes down. The passenger side light seems to be on the right cycle (up when on, down when off) but the drivers side is doing the same thing. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Re: FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
I've not encountered this problem but there must be some wires crossed somewhere. Is there any way to reverse the connector at the headlight motor?

Also, is it possible something got reversed when you installed the new module? Im not sure exactly what is involved in that job or if it even possible to reverse something, but thought Id throw it out there.

Re: FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
the reversing the wires should work.. try use alligator clips and cross it, see if it works and if it does, eithier flip it somehow or cut and crimp the thing

Re: FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
crossed wires could be a possibility because when I bought the car the motor on that side never worked. There also was really a very hack job to try to get it to work. I'm not an eletrician by any standards but won't crossing the two wires be wrong because one of them is the ground and one of them holds a current? I don't know am I wrong?

That's true. I would never suggest to anyone to put the main power feed to the motors ground wire, and the main ground wire to the motors power feed. What I would recommend doing is turn the headlight switch to the on posistion, go to the headlight that isn't flipped open, use the manual control knob on the top of the motor, and turn it until it is open. That way both headlights will be open, then try turning the switch off and back on to see if both your headlights are on the same sequence. If that doesn't fix it, then I would have to guess that you bought the motor for the other side headlight, and basically just installed it upside down. Each side has a different motor, they are identical, but one faces one way and the other faces the other way. So if you ended up putting the wrong motor in, then that could explain why the light is going up after you turn them off. Just my guess. << This doesn't work and it was the first thing i tried. The motor that I have seems to be the motor that the car came with. The way the motor works I THINK (based on a little research) is that the motor knows which way to turn by the direction of the current coming in. So there is something wrong with the current coming in. I didn't buy the motor it came with the car. I bought a module. |

Well as long as the red wires and black wires are meeting, then I would believe that you have it installed right. From my experience of working on electronics, when you meet the positive to the ground, and vice versa, normally nothing would happen. I guess you could try switching the wires and see if that does the trick. I guess logically it could work, I've never had to try to be honest.

Re: FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
It is possible to have the wires reversed. The current passes in both directions to direct the motor to turn the correct way. The current travels one way to lift the bezel and then travels the opposite way to lower the bezel. The best way to check that the current is travelling the right way is to take a volt meter and test both sides. Test the passengers side first because it's the one on the correct pattern. Then test the other side. If the drivers side polarity is backward, then cut and reconnect the wires accordingly.

Re: FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
Thanks a lot that is exactly what I wanted to know. I will try to reverse them and see what happens! I'll let you guys know tomorrow. I want to thank everyone again for all their help because I really appreciate it!!

Re: FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
It's possible that the wires on the motor were wired backward, or like you said, your wiring was fudged up. Reguardless, you can reverse dc motors.

Re: FireBird Headlight Problem (not gear)
hmm..to cover my ass, i meant cross the wires after you took it off the MOTOR. the motor has a + or - input and its not grounded...since it has to reverse directions to open/close..
so, remove the connector to the motor, get two wires w. alligator clips send one to the + side and other to - side, try it out, if it does the same thing, flip/cross em..if that works, wire it that way..somehow..
