Question Replacing a ECU in a 2000 Avalon XLS

background info....................I have an Avalon with 146,000 miles, I've had the knock sensors replaced and the check engine light went out for a short time and then it came on to stay, so I had it retested and the testing report indicated the ECU is bad.

Called the Toyota Tech Depart. they seem to think I could install a used ECU at a much lower cost. ($1,200 just for the new ECU)

Can anyone tell me if they have done this and what does this entail? Do I have to use the same model year 2000 or can I use a newer/older model year?(searched the net and found a 2001 XLS with 48,000 miles)

I would like to keep the car for as long as it will run but don't want to stick a ton of money into it, so any info would be great.

thanks in advance

Was this done at a Toyota dealership? It's very unusual to have the problems you mention. (not impossible, but rare).

Do you remember the DTC codes (scanned codes)?

Did you buy the car used? I mention this because if you contact Toyota directly with the history and your current situation they will issue a case number and look into it.

I've seen ecu's replaced for free and some partial compensation in other cases.

no, the shop I took it to is owned by a former toyota mechanic. (took over family bus.) he stated the same thing. he's never heard of it going bad, but it may be the exception. He even talked with one of his friends (current toyota mechanic and he came to the same conculsion)

Sorry I don't have the codes as the work was done in another state (moved recently)

yes, I bought the vehicle used 33,000 miles (engine was rebuilt by the toyota dealership due oil valve sticking- free of charge) have not had any trouble the whole time I've owned the vehicle and toyota started my warranty on the engine from the 33,000 mile mark.

I checked with Toyota asked them about any and/or all of the recall items related to my car.
They indicated that it wouldn't be covered due the milage, but have assigned a case number and they are going notify me if they come across anything.

should I spend the money and have it tested again?

Is the car driving ok? Do you have normal acceleration or is it running in limp mode?

Most parts places like autozone or car quest etc. will hook up an OBDII scanner for free so they can sell you parts.

Try calling first to see if they do then get the codes.
