92 3.8l water pump replacement
Has anyone done a water pump on a 92 Taurus with the 3.8 engine? Once I couldn't pull the old one out of the hole, I looked in Chiltons and they indicate the engine has to be raised? True? any other way out? How many things ought to get disconnected along with loosening motor mounts? exhaust? cooling lines? etc?

Re: 92 3.8l water pump replacement
Don't know about the 92, I did my kid's 93 with 3.8, wasn't too bad, if I remember I think the pulley had to be loosened on the pump, but then you couldn't take it offbecause too tight of a fit in there, left it hanging loose, you had to take off all the bolts and then remove the water pump and pulley together,, the bolts were important you had to put certain ones back in certain places, there were 2 or 3 different lengths, most books give you a diagram. There was the usual stuff, belt off,I think a bracket or two also.

Re: 92 3.8l water pump replacement
When I replaced my water pump on my 93 3.8l I had to unbolt 2 motor mounts to raise the engine. I tried to take off the pulley but did not work. Once you raise the engine it will be an easy install.

Re: 92 3.8l water pump replacement
Went back and looked on my disc for 93, nowhere does it say that the motor must be raised, however in doing that(jacking motor) I'm sure it's one of those things that make the job easier and aren't necessarily noted in any repair book.
3.8L Engine Removal 1. Drain engine coolant. Refer to coolant drain procedure. 2. Disconnect battery ground cable. 3. Loosen accessory drive belt idler and remove drive belts. 4. Remove two nuts and one bolt attaching idler bracket to engine. 5. Disconnect heater hose at water pump. 6. Remove four pulley-to-pump hub bolts. The pulley will remain loose on hub due to insufficient clearance between inner fender and pump, restricting removal from vehicle. 7. Remove 11 water pump-to-engine retaining bolts. 8. Lift water pump and pulley out of vehicle. Installation NOTE: Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads before installation except those specifying special sealant. 1. Clean both gasket mating surfaces on water pump and engine front cover. 2. Position gasket on water pump sealing surface using Gasket and Trim Adhesive D7AZ-19B508-BA (ESE-M2G52-A and ESR-M11P17-A) or equivalent. 3. With pulley positioned on water pump hub, position water pump on front cover and install attaching bolts. CAUTION: Two lengths of bolts are used. Install bolts as shown. 4. Tighten retaining bolts to specification. Refer to illustration. 5. Install pulley-to-pump hub bolts. Tighten to 21 N-m (16 lb-ft). 6. Connect coolant bypass/heater hose to water pump. 7. Install idler bracket to front cover. 8. Position accessory drive belt over pump pulley and adjust drive belt tension, if equipped with manual tensioner. Refer to «Section 03-05». 9. Connect battery ground cable. 10. Replace engine coolant. Refer to «Coolant Refill» procedures. Operate engine until normal operation temperature is reached. Check for leaks and check coolant level. |

Re: 92 3.8l water pump replacement
That's what my Chilton's said too. My friend, who is a Ford tech, told me that was the easiest way to do it. So I did it that way. Just saying it was easier for me.
