Re: engine

I won't be able to help on this topic, but it would help others if you post the year of your Taurus and what engine and transmission it currently has.

Definately need year - if it were a 12 valve motor, I would be reluctant to do anything with it. The transmissions behind them seem to give people greif and make their wallets thinner. IMO - It might be in your best interest in the long run to maybe look into getting another used vehical.

What is wrong with the engine? If it doesn't need any lower end work, it maybe be cheaper and less fustrating to fix everything that's wrong with the motor. I wouldn't hesitate to fix a blown head gasket over replacing the engine, though, it depends on the problem(s). If it had water in the oil for some time, I definately wouldn't put any money into the motor.

You're probably looking at replacing your engine with the same engine from a different Taurus. It shouldn't be hard to find. The engines (excluding some 3.8Ls) seem to out live the transmissions. Otherwise, you'll be getting into changing the PCM and maybe even the wiring harness. I am not positive on the wiring, I've never done and engine swap in a Taurus. I do know that if you go with a different motor, it's definately going to add a big pita factor into the equasion.

Re: engine

yeah sry it is a 99 and it has the 3.0 vulcan...and no i was postin the reignator pipe about my friends taurus. heres the story about the motor i replaced the head gasket and i wasn't thinking and i didn't change the oil now its smokin real bad out of the exhaust, and only when the motor warms up it knocks really bad and will stall out and not start back up. i thought that it was an oil pump so i took off the valve cover started the car and it was pumping oil, has e ever heard of this or should i juss get theh new one and not worrie about it.

Re: engine

You could probably get a new engine for between $900-$1300, as for your symptoms.
Scorched cylinder wall?
Malformed piston?
Thrown rod?
Broken valve?
Bad/Improperly Installed Gasket?

I would check the gaskets and maybe have the engine flushed before going into the possibilities of a dead engine.

Consult a mechanic also.
