1994 pontiac grand prix se starting issue

Sometimes the car will start with no problems. Then you turn the key over it makes no noise but a buzzing noise near the glove box. Found out it is the anti-theft relay. If you sit their and keep trying to turn it over it will eventually turn over and start and sometimes it will start and shut right off. Took the car to a garage they could not find anything wrong with it. If any one can help with the problem it would be greatly appreciated.

IF your key has a resistor in it, it could be a dirty key is causing teh security module to not recognize the key. Try cleaning the metal strip in the resistor with a pencil eraser to remove oily residue to see if it fixes it. If the relay is sticking, it's a Delco part # 15-8719 and is located in the underhood relay center. Another suggestion is to unbolt the relay center and carefully check the underside for corrosion of the terminals. Since it's mounted under the hood, corrosion is a fairly common problem, especially high mileage and cars in areas where salt is used on the roads in winter.

Re: 1994 pontiac grand prix se starting issue

I had a problem just like this with my 1994 Grand Prix. I fixed the problem today. It was the ignition module($70)item. I explained what it was doing and they told me to try a spare used one they had and it worked. What my car was doing was acting like the key security thing but it still wouldnt start after the 3 min waiting reset time. It would turn over and run for like a 2 second than die. It would do this every time I turned tryed to start it. I had this problem years ago and had the local dealership work on it and they thought it was the key relay, they bypassed it and it wasnt that. I'm not sure what it was at that time but they were puzzled and only charge me $125 because thats what they told me would be the problem and cost. They had it for days. So today I went out and replaced this thinking it wouldnt help but it did. Started right up and ran smooth. Its easy to replace. Mark you plug wires 1-6 in the order thay are plugged to the coils, then pull off the plug wires of the coils, then there are 2 bolts for the coils one on top and the other down bottom. Take each coil off. Than unhook 3 wire plugs and the Ignition mudule will come off. Put the new on back on with electrical grease on the metal plate the grounds to the motor and then put everything back togather reversing your steps. I hope this helps you.
