trans question
alright i'm in need of more performance so i think that i am going to take my 350 (if it still runs cause it's beeen sitting in a truck for awhile but i think if i hook up a battery check the fluids and pour some gas i the carb she should fire up) and when i get the time pull the motor out of the truck(73 3/4 ton with 350 4bolt main) and when i have a three or four day weekend drop that motor in my maro. Now to my question. if i take my 305 tpi out the computer will come with it. But do i need the computer for the transmission? btw if you need to know i have a 89 iroc 305 tpi 700-r4 and 2.73 posi rear

Re: trans question
no tranny expert... but i am pretty damn sure that in '89 the auto trannies had their shifts electronically controlled... idk if that can be changed... or if you need a new tranny... i wish i was more help...
you can always just throw a manual in there and forget about all that shit

Re: trans question
700r4's are not electronically controlled except for the torque convertor lock-up. '93 and newer tranny's are called 4l60E's. They ARE computer controlled. You'll have no problem using your orig. 700r4 but you will have to hook up a toggle switch to manually control torque converter lock-up. It's pretty easy. You are basically just energizing a solonoid that directs pressure to the TCC. There are only 3 wires and you really only need to use 2. positive and ground. The third wire I if I remember is grounded through a 4th gear switch that is closed in 4th gear. Hope this helps.

Re: trans question
just thinking- I don't think that old 350 is gonna be much better than your current TPI 305. If that is the original 3/4 ton motor, which had low compression heads, (not much performance at all) I don't think it would help. Even if it does have a little more power, is it worth it? You'll probably get half the mileage you get now, and you'll be back messing with a carb. I think a lot smarter move would be to do a few things to your 305 TPI. You'd be amazed what a chip, new cat back exhaust and a few bolt-ons would do. Plus if you run a carb you gotta figure out what to do with your fuel lines/pump.

Re: trans question
yea he's right, but i have another idea, why not drop in the 350, and put the 305 heads and tpi on it. the 305 heads will raise the compression, and you'll have the performance advantage of tpi, just hafta change the injectors and a few other small items.

Re: trans question
alright thanks for the help and the reason i am going to put the 350 in is because i am going to put new heads intake and carb on it about a month after i get it put in there. then some headers and ignition and a few other things. i thought about doing that with the tpi and 305 heads on a 350 but i thought that you would have get the computer prom recalibrated or something like that. Or does any body know.

Re: trans question
and those of you wondering about me getting a 400 im still going to get it but that will be later on down the road. i might end up putting it in my dads 86 z-28.
but does anybody know about the 305 heads on 350 like what size injectors and what octane. i really want some more perfomance so any one's ideas are excepted. i'm considering the tpi and 305heads on 350 because i have the 350 and tpi system on the 305 and so it might be pretty cheap so i think i could do it. |
