Strange starting problem

Windstar 2003 - 80000 km. My problem with starting commenced a few months ago. Strange is that it starts perfectly after longer pause (let say in the morning, after the whole night) and also after very short time off (couple of minutes). When I try start between these limits it takes longer time but then it runs pritty well. I arranged to replace (step by step) - 1. spark plugs+coil+wires+tune-up 2. fuel pump 3. fuel pressure regulator+coolant temp sensor. Still no change. My mechanic is helpless. Any idea what it could be? Thanks for any reply.

Re: Strange starting problem

Welcome Andrew,
We need more details. How [i]exactly [i] does it not start? I fixed my starting issue with a new coil pack. But, guess you've already been there . .

Post More Details . . .

Karl

Re: Strange starting problem

It takes 2-3 attempts (each for couple of seconds) until it starts up. It usually helps to press the gas pedal during starting. Sometimes I can smell the gas after engine is finally on.

Re: Strange starting problem

Have you tried replacing the PCM power relay, and the fuel pump relay?

Re: Strange starting problem

This is a longshot but something that you might check out. You might have a leaky injector which is flooding the van. When the van is turned off, there is still fuel pressure. If one of the injetors is leaking just a small amount, raw gas will be dumped into the intake. If the van is off for a short time, not enough gas has leaked to flood the van. If the van is off for a longer time, then enough gas has leaked into the intake to flood the van. If the van is off overnight, the fuel that has leaked into the intake has had time to evaorate before you start the van in the morning so it will start fine. Have you mechanic do a injector pressure drop test.

Re: Strange starting problem

Hi guys,
the problem is finally gone. Davwha was right. One of the injectors was faulty (I don't know if leaky, but it was replaced). It starts perfect now. Maybe this helps somebody.
