Brake Upgrade Questions

Ever since I’ve owned my ’99 GP GT I’ve felt the brakes were a real weakness when it came to stopping power and safety. I’ve been reading the following articles about upgrading the front brakes to 12” rotors with great interest and I’m about ready to give it a try.

http://www.clubgp.com/cgi-asp/mods.asp?modid=3
http://www.scacgp.com/mods/f-bodybrakes.htm
http://www.mcssuperssite.com/ftowcaliper.htm

I do have a couple of questions before I get into this project though.

1. Has anyone done this successfully on a stock ’99 GP GT with the stock 16” 5-spoke wheels? In other words – will everything fit under the wheel?

2. Would an OEM 12” rotor or an aftermarket drilled & slotted 12” rotor be a better choice?

This forum has been the source of a lot of great information and I look forward to your comments on this project.

Re: Brake Upgrade Questions

i havent done it...yet. maybe in the future. as far as the rotors, i have read that the drilled or slotted rotors are only better if your are doing some serious racing. the purpose of them is to disipate heat better and prevent warping. normal to high normal driving wont get them hot enough for you to feel a difference or for them to really perform their purpose. in fact, in some studies, bolt on drilled/slotted will actually take longer to stop because THERE IS LESS SURFACE AREA! i want to do this to my 01 gt in the future, so let us all know how it goes. i just like the look of the drilled/ slotted rotors, so i may get them anyway. it would be a bigger rotor, so the difference in size mat make up for the drills/slots.

THANKS!! This answers all my questions but one and the pictures really help. Have you seen this article:

http://www.scacgp.com/mods/f-bodybrakes.htm

Do you think there is enough room using your standard 16" rims and 12" rotors to clear the F-body calipers like shown in this link?

I plan to do this mod as soon as the snow melts and it's warm enough to work outside.

Wes
