head gasket

I have a 1990, 900 turbo, 16v, 2.0L. I am in the middle of replacing the head gasket. The new gasket fits but is a different configuration. The new one has less passages for coolant to flow. I heard the gasket has been updated numerous times. I want to make sure it's the right one. The number on the gasket is B20/Bb23 16v (elring gasket).

2nd question - When installing the head gasket should I use any type of sealant. I have read yes and no. If so, what should I use, and where should I put it?

Thanks
Dave

Re: head gasket

According to the part # you've given, it's a multiple application gasket that would work on either your engine or a B234I engine and as long as none of your oil, coolant, or air passages are blocked or left open by it, no worries.
The only place that requires any sealant is the top of the timing cover. Clean it well and apply a bead of "anaerobic" sealant to it before placing the gasket.
