88 Sierra 2500 4th Fuel Pump in a year.
My dad bought a 88 Sierra last year, and the fuel pump goes out in it every 2-3 months. We've tried multiple fuel relays, changing the injectors, etc., but were pretty sure its the pump once again. He lets it run way down on gas, almost till empty, and then puts more gas in. Does that have anything to do with it? We put in 5 gallons but it didn't do anything. We even dumped some gas into the throttle body, and it started, but it quit after it used all the gas we dumped in. Any suggestions would help, thanks...

Are you cleaning the tank when you change the pump? Actually droping the tank draining it and cleaning all of the crap out of it, I usually use a steam cleaner then let it dry before putting it back in. Also are you changing the sock and the gas filter when you put a new pump in? Also a good idea to replace the gas cap.

A pressure gauge would be a good tool to add to your box. I have read in a lot of forums that the fuel keeps the pump cool. I lost three in two years so I never let it go much below 1/4 any more. Bob B |

Re: 88 Sierra 2500 4th Fuel Pump in a year.
lots of things to consider here, one- does he fuel up at the same station every time? if so try another station and diff. company. that particular station may have trash in their tanks. next- where are you getting these pumps from? if not GM pumps..try a GM part. I have had people get the same part aftermarket 3 and 4 times, and they all were bad. at least try a diff supplier. the fuel pressure tester is a good idea, these trucks can be very particular and need the exact correct pressure to run. late 80's and early 90's not as much though. also the part store could be given you the wrong p/n. the part might look right, but may have a different regulator or pressure setting.

Carter does make very good fuel pumps also.My father puts in Carter and had to replace two of them so far.Rest of them work so far.Where did you get the fuel pump?Stay away from AutoZone,Advanced auto parts.Stay away from Airtex, they are junk also.My father had to replace 6 of them in a Chevy truck,Carquest fuel pumps made by Airtex and warrenty claims denied.Airtex also makes fuel pumps for Napa. They used to make fuel pumps for Carquest.Carquest dropped them and went to a differant supplier.

Go with a GM pump in my opinion. What you spend in cost will save you in aggravation from having to change the pump every few months.
