Dash Removal and tranny question
alright heres the deal... i'm fairly new here... not even a week since i joined... and i have put up a few posts... but i need some major help... i need to figure out the easiest way to remove the dash... i have to take the dash out to replace the speedo... it's doesn't work and whenever i turn my headlights on it jumps all the way up to like 90 mph... so yeah my speedo moves by itself plus i'm putting a different one in anyway... so what is the easiest way to take out the dash in my 89' firebird
next question: the guy i bought the car off of took out the 5 liter and 700r tranny and put a 350 ci and 350 turbo in... now there is a bar that runs from the tranny to the rear end... i went to jegs and bought the hundred dollar conversion kit... now the conversion kit is fitting up on the right way... i called the guy up and he said it was a long shaft (or tail) tranny and that i would need a short shaft tranny for the conversion kit is this right thanks

Re: Dash Removal and tranny question
Are you looking to replace the dash pad(Top piece) or the faceplate. To remove the faceplate, you should remove the lower kick panels below the steering column. Then lower the column itself. This will allow you to reomve the faceplate without much effort.
The short tail tranny is the common tranny for cars, whereas the long tail is usually truck application. |

Re: Dash Removal and tranny question
Are you looking for info to change the tranny? In order to change from a long tail to a short tail, you either have to change out the whole trans or disassemble the trans completely and change the output shaft and tail housing. Changing the output shaft would be less expensive but more work, but 350's are relatively easy to disassemble/reassemble as far as tranny's go.

Re: Dash Removal and tranny question
alright well i screwed up on the post... i got the conversion kit... and it doesn't fit up on the long shaft transmission right... i'm asking if i take the long shaft tranny out and put the short shaft tranny in should everything fit up in there right with the conversion kit?
i have a short shaft 350 to go in it so if this conversion kit fits in there right i'm probably going to take the long shaft transmission out and put the whole short shaft up in there i shouldn't have worded that the way i did about the dash... what i want to know is how to replace the speedo... thanks for the help

Re: Dash Removal and tranny question
The whole instrument cluster is electronic. When you pull the face off you can unbole thescrews on the cluster and the whole thing will come out. If you look, you'll notice that the back of the cluster has no cables, but instead, it has a circuit board and a plug in. So if you need to replace the speedo, you'l have to replace the whole cluster.
