I have a 1997 cvpi. Since i got it 2 years ago, I couldn't stand the traction control system and wanted to install a limited slip out of a mustang. I was about to go buy a used one when I thought I would double check my axle code. It says "X5" which as far as I can tell means it IS a limited slip 3.27, however I don't see that rear as an option on the 97'.
What are the odds that my limited slip clutches were just so worn out by 95,000 miles that when I got the car it completely didn't work? Can anyone confirm that the "X5" rear is a limited slip 3.27? |

I will have to get back to you on the axle code. But if you can get the numbers on your axle tag on your rear axle it would be easyer to tell you what you have. The tag is located n the rear axle held on by one of the axle cover bolts.

Yes you have 3.27 limited Slip Diff. As for the clutchs it is possible that they are worn because CVPI's go thriugh a lot of abuse. But before you go and replace the clutches I would have the Diff. fluid change if not done so in a while and see if that helps.

I haven't ever checked the fluid (bad me) if I put in fresh fluid is there any kind of special fluid I need to use for it? I thought I'd heard of friction modifier or something.

When you change you Diff. Fluid you need to add at least 4 oz of Friction Modifier to the fluid. As for what type of fluid to use go with I would use motorcraft or valvoline I would also go to your local auto parts store and they will tell you which weight to get.
