Alito Sworn In

What does everyone think of Alito being sworn in lately? I'm not really up to date with this whole thing and kind of wanted opinions.

I know he passed with the lowest number of opposing party votes in history.. Can't be good.

Re: Alito Sworn In

Meh, he's such a Conservative. Which isn't a bad thing, depending on what you believe.

But it's almost a 100% surety that he's the man that will take away abortion rights, which is something I believe in, so I'm not too happy about that.

Finally, more help for if/when Bush's illegal wiretaps come before the Court...funny how they're strict constructionists in all regards except when it doesn't help them.

Re: Alito Sworn In

I just have little confidence in him and his understanding of the law, constitution, and his place as a justice. Not to mention that regardless of his party affiliations, he has made some absolutely appalling decisions on the court of appeals. The one that won't leave my mind was when he supported officers who shot an unarmed 15 year old boy in the back of the head who was running away after stealing a purse. I just don't understand in what way deadly force can be authorized in such situations. Doesn't say much for his character, that's for sure.

Re: Alito Sworn In

Nothing in Alito's defense, but it would seem to me that anyone put in public office is going to be subject to scrutiny in the highest regard.

It doesn't seem like there are many politicians that haven't, for lack of a better term, f***ed up in the past.

This wiretapping is also rediculous. I don't do anything wrong, but I'd like to know that if I did, I'd have the piece of mind to think that i'd get away with it.

I hate seeing the demolition of civil liberties and this demolition is definitely at a bipartisan fault. I'm afraid I'm becoming a libertarian. Maybe a republitarian.

Re: Alito Sworn In

I'm definitely upset about Alito taking a seat on the SC. Many of the cases that sat 5/4 in favor of dems such as abortion will now turn over. I think america has finally lost the purpose of democracy; our officials and our citizens vote blue and red bias only, hoping to have either party gain or retain power. Honestly, the only large affecting election i can truly say that an official was voted due to his performance rather than party was Mike Bloomberg over Freddy Ferrer in 2004 NYC mayor elections. NYC is something like 2/3 to 3/4 registered democrats, very liberal democrats. Yet, Giuliani stayed in office, why? cuz he was good. Bloomberg stayed in office, why? cuz he was good. i mean, i'm sure pple here will say well, our curent pres was good and that's why we elected him. no. not the case. i don't think you'd get that from many democrats. you would about bloomberg.
so no, Alito was just a judge Bush picked out to fortify the SC with more repubs, very right wing repubs.

edit: this is a pretty left answer. i'm actually apathetic most of the time. i'm not registered dem or repub.

How is that not fair? We're entrusting him with making what will be some of the most important legal decisions of our lifetime, and he has that job until he doesn't want it or dies. I'd like to know that who ever's being entrusted with that job is able to take a little pressure...that was totally fair, and should be encouraged in instances like this.

Re: Alito Sworn In

The wife cried for a sympathy vote, nothing more. Politics is as much if not more aggressive today than it has ever been. Whatever politicians (and their significant other's) can do to get ahead, they'll do it. I'm not surprised Bush picked two people who are very much alike, so it's probably safe to say the way one goes may be the way the other does as well. The Dems are just as lowbrow in their tactics -- let's face it, they don't want a "moderate" on the bench, they want a "liberal" -- and it's obvious that a republican president wouldn't go that way. Of course, NONE of this should have to do with partisanship at all, but it would be foolhardy to think it isn't about "red vs. blue".

And who would represent the "other" millions of people out there who don't consider themselves democrat OR republican -- or may not care WHAT "color" sits in the highest judicial spot, as long as they're fair? How is this even "democracy"? How much say did you really have over any of these nominations? Senators, Representatives, Governers, and Presidents are all limited by terms -- these people are for LIFE.

I would not be jumping to any conclusions on Alito. Checkout the link below:

Re: Alito Sworn In

The vote would have been 5-4 if he had voted the other way, so nothing conclusive here; he could just be "easing in" and getting ready to put his vote in where he thinks it will matter more. I'm sure there are lots of politics on the SC, so he is biding his time.
